Florida Republicans just crushed Democrats with numbers not seen in decades

Dec 4, 2025

Florida used to be America's ultimate swing state where both parties fought for every vote.

Those days are over.

And Florida Republicans just crushed Democrats with numbers not seen in decades.

GOP Gains Nearly 5,000 Voters While Democrats Bleed Supporters

The Republican Party of Florida expanded its registration advantage over Democrats to more than 1.4 million voters in November according to the latest voter book-closing data.¹

Republicans saw a net gain of nearly 5,000 voters in the last month while Democrats dropped more than 5,300 registered voters during the same period.²

The latest figures show the Republican Party of Florida with approximately 5.10 million registered voters compared to roughly 4.10 million for the Florida Democrat Party.

The total number of active party-affiliated voters in the state stands at approximately 13.45 million.³

This massive gap represents a stunning reversal from just a decade ago when Democrats still held the registration advantage in the Sunshine State.

Republicans first overtook Democrats in total registration in late 2021 for the first time in state history and have been building their lead ever since.⁴

The November voter registration numbers came from data director for Decision Desk HQ who has been tracking Florida's dramatic political transformation.

Democrats Watched Registration Advantage Completely Evaporate

Back in 2016, Florida Democrats still held a registration edge of roughly 259,000 voters when Trump narrowly beat Hillary Clinton in the state.⁵

That lead shrank to about 134,000 voters going into the 2020 general election when Trump carried Florida again.⁶

By 2022, the registration advantage had flipped completely to Republicans as Governor Ron DeSantis was cruising toward his landslide reelection victory over Democrat Charlie Crist.

Democrats held a registration lead of 263,269 voters as recently as 2018 when DeSantis needed a recount to defeat Democrat Andrew Gillum by less than half a percentage point.⁷

Those days feel like ancient history now.

The sustained shift in registration numbers provides a clear statistical foundation for the state's recent electoral results including President Donald Trump's 13.1-point victory in Florida in the 2024 general election.

Florida has transformed from a swing state into solid Republican territory and the registration numbers prove it.

Republicans now lead in voter registration in 59 out of 67 Florida counties.⁸

Miami-Dade County Republicans hold a 37,000-voter lead over Democrats in what was once a Democratic stronghold.⁹

Even Palm Beach County, another traditional Democratic bastion, has seen its Democratic registration lead shrink to barely over 2%.¹⁰

The Republican Party of Florida celebrates every new milestone in voter registration with good reason.

Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power summed up the transformation: "Heading into the 2020 election the Florida Democrats had a 134,000 voter advantage over the Florida GOP. In just 5 years we have erased that 1.5% lead and now have pushed to a Republican +10 Electorate. The Florida GOP leads the way!"¹¹

Democrats haven't held control of the state legislature or the governor's office since the 1990s and their voter registration collapse shows they're not winning them back anytime soon.

The Republican registration surge isn't just happening in Florida either.

An analysis by The New York Times showed that in the 30 states that track voter registration by political party, Democrats lost 2.1 million registered voters between the 2020 and 2024 elections while Republicans gained 2.4 million voters.¹²

Florida Democrats are bleeding voters faster than almost anywhere else in the country and they have no strategy to stop it.

The party has dealt with infighting and failed to put together a sustained coherent effort to reach voters according to political experts who study Florida politics.¹³

Republicans dominate Florida now and the voter registration data proves that Democratic hopes of flipping the state blue have died.
