Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis Just Had a Secret Meeting at Doral and Iran Is Not Going to Like What Happened Next

Apr 14, 2026

Iran seized control of the world's most critical oil chokepoint and turned it into a toll booth – charging ships millions just to pass through waters they have no legal right to control.

Trump spent Sunday at Doral with Ron DeSantis, publicly told reporters he didn't care about the peace talks, and then made a move from his golf cart that Tehran did not see coming.

What he did next has the entire U.S. Navy in motion this morning.

What Trump Did While Vance Was in Pakistan

While JD Vance sat across the table from Iranian negotiators for 21 straight hours in Islamabad, Trump was at the UFC fight in Miami watching bouts with Marco Rubio, Joe Rogan, and Donald Jr.

When reporters asked about the negotiations, Trump said, "I don't care."

He meant it.

Iran had walked into those talks demanding the right to keep enriching uranium and maintain their stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump's response came at midnight from his motorcade: a Truth Social post announcing the United States Navy would blockade any ship trying to enter or leave the strait effective immediately.

"Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!" he added.

That's not diplomatic language.

That's a president who doesn't need a deal – and wants Iran to know it.

The DeSantis Meeting No One Expected

Sunday afternoon, before the blockade announcement, Trump sat down at Doral with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his wife Casey.

The White House confirmed the meeting.

What the White House didn't need to confirm is what everyone in political circles already knows – DeSantis is being actively discussed as the next U.S. Attorney General.

Trump fired Pam Bondi eleven days ago after growing frustration over her handling of the Epstein files and her failure to deliver the prosecutorial results he demanded.

Todd Blanche is holding the seat in an acting capacity, and Fox News has DeSantis on the list of names circulating for the permanent role.

The Florida governor who turned his state into the most successful Republican laboratory in the country – the man who crushed COVID authoritarianism, dismantled Disney's political machine, and sent migrants to Martha's Vineyard – could now be headed to the Justice Department.

That would be a very different attorney general than Pam Bondi.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters to Your Gas Tank

Iran has been running a protection racket on the world's oil supply since the war began in February.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly one-fifth of the world's oil.

Iran shut it down – then started charging ships up to $2 million per vessel to transit under armed IRGC escort through a passage Iran now controls by force.

Two tankers had already paid fees in Chinese yuan just to get their cargo through.

Trump called it exactly what it is: extortion.

He ordered the Navy to interdict every vessel in international waters that paid Iran a toll and to begin clearing the mines Iran laid in the strait.

Brent crude jumped 8% to $104 a barrel on the news.

Trump acknowledged on Fox News that gas prices could be "the same or maybe a little bit higher" by the midterms.

He said it anyway.

That's a president who plays long ball.

The Move Iran Didn't See Coming

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley put it plainly: if America did nothing, Iran would have leverage AND the money to fund its proxies and ballistic missile program simultaneously.

Trump cut off both.

The blockade targets Iranian ports specifically – CENTCOM confirmed it won't stop non-Iranian vessels transiting the strait to other destinations.

This is surgical.

Iran wants to play toll collector on international shipping lanes they seized through military force.

Trump told them no ship that pays that toll gets safe passage anywhere in international waters.

Iran's parliament speaker – their lead negotiator in Islamabad – responded by posting a photo of American gas prices with the caption promising Americans would soon be "nostalgic for $4–$5 gas."

That response tells you everything.

They didn't threaten military retaliation.

They threatened your wallet.

Which means they know the military fight isn't going their way – and they're betting Trump blinks on the economic pressure before they do.

They're betting wrong.
