A 537-vote margin handed Democrats the White House once.
Ron DeSantis just made sure Florida never hands them anything again.
Starting next month, your Florida driver's license will say something Democrats have spent decades making sure it couldn't.
What DeSantis Just Signed Into Law
HB 991 – Florida's version of the federal SAVE Act – does something simple.
It stamps citizenship status right on your driver's license and state ID card.
Every new license, every renewal, every replacement issued after July 1 will show whether the holder is a U.S. citizen.
The full law kicks in January 1, 2027 – meaning by the next election cycle, Florida's voter rolls will be verified against IDs that actually tell the truth.

DeSantis signed it at The Villages on April 1 and called it a top priority from day one.
The House passed it 77-28.
The Senate passed it 27-12.
Democrats voted against it almost unanimously – they looked at a bill saying you have to be a citizen to vote and said no.
This Wasn't Just About Driver's Licenses
HB 991 overhauled Florida's entire Election Code in one shot.
Voter registration applicants must now swear under oath they are U.S. citizens – with criminal perjury charges waiting if they lie.
Student IDs, retirement home IDs, debit cards, and public assistance cards are gone from the list of valid poll identification.
Foreign nationals are banned from contributing to Florida campaigns, with new fines and penalties attached.
Candidates running for federal office must disclose whether they plan to trade stocks if elected.
Dual citizens running for any office must publicly disclose their foreign citizenship.

And Florida will now cross-reference voter rolls against federal court records to flag noncitizens who become ineligible due to conviction, death, or loss of status.
The state's own Office of Election Crimes and Security found 198 likely noncitizens who illegally registered and voted in Florida in 2025 alone – out of more than 13 million registered voters.
Democrats Filed Lawsuits Before the Ink Was Dry
Two federal lawsuits landed within hours of DeSantis's signature.
The Elias Law Group sued on behalf of the Florida NAACP, arguing citizenship verification is an "unlawful burden on the right to vote."
DeSantis saw it coming from a mile away.
"They go to a liberal judge. The liberal judge sides with them. Then we appeal and we win," he said.
He's done this before – Florida's 2021 voter ID reforms survived every legal challenge Democrats threw at them.
The playbook is always the same: scream disenfranchisement, find a sympathetic district court judge, generate headlines, lose on appeal.
It hasn't worked yet.
Georgia implemented enhanced citizenship verification through its DMV back in 2012 and became the model every other red state studied.
Louisiana is already moving a nearly identical bill through its legislature right now.
Florida didn't close a loophole.
It built the next template – and other states are already watching.
And starting July 1, your Florida driver's license will say what it should have said all along.
