America spent sixty years building a welfare system that turned the government into the first call when life falls apart.
Now a Florida First Lady is dismantling that assumption – and 30,000 families are proof it works.
Casey DeSantis stepped in front of the Florida Chamber Foundation Tuesday and laid out a model conservatives have talked about for decades but never managed to build.
Churches Were Doing This Before Government Showed Up
The pitch sounds simple because it is.
Hope Florida doesn't hand people a check.
It hands them a navigator – a real person who maps out their barriers and connects them directly to the churches, businesses, and nonprofits already sitting in their communities waiting to help.
"Good people are out there in the communities, and they want to help, they just don't know where to look," DeSantis said Tuesday.

That's the problem Hope Florida solves.
The platform doing the matchmaking is called CarePortal – a real-time system that pushes verified family needs to vetted faith organizations and businesses.
A church sees a single mom needs a bed frame and diapers.
They respond.
"That is the private sector and faith-based organizations getting in front of problems so people don't go to government to begin with," DeSantis said.
The Numbers Democrats Don't Want to Talk About
Hope Florida launched in 2021.
Since then, more than 30,000 Floridians have either eliminated or reduced their reliance on public assistance entirely.
The program has referred over 115,000 people through a network of 5,000 partners – businesses, nonprofits, and 1,200 faith-based organizations spread across all 67 Florida counties.
State estimates project the program could save taxpayers nearly $1 billion over the next decade.

Over 3,000 participants have secured employment, with 87 percent of them receiving a wage increase within six months on the job.
Tuesday's event wasn't just a status update – it was Casey DeSantis expanding the model.
She announced plans to bring fatherhood initiative organizations into the CarePortal system, opening new mentorship pipelines for at-risk families.
Florida's nursing homes and long-term care facilities are next in line.
This Is What Washington Promised and Never Delivered
Reagan said it in 1981: government isn't the solution to the problem, government is the problem.
Every Republican since then nodded along and did nothing.
Bush created a White House Office of Faith-Based Initiatives in 2001.
It produced reports.
Casey DeSantis built navigators, a real-time matching platform, and a network spanning every one of Florida's 67 counties – and then watched 30,000 families walk off government assistance.
Governor DeSantis put it plainly: "The government should incentivize charity and philanthropy, not supplant it."

That's the whole argument.
Democrats built a system where a family's first call is to a government agency.
Hope Florida built a system where their first call is to a neighbor.
DCF Secretary Taylor Hatch reinforced the human element Tuesday, describing the transformation he sees in young adults aging out of foster care when someone – just one person – shows up in their corner.
"It's that one person that's in your corner that can make all the difference in the world," Hatch said.
The Left Hates This Because It Works
The model is already drawing fire from the same crowd that defended the welfare status quo for sixty years.
They want the money going through government agencies.
They want the dependency maintained.
Hope Florida cuts them out entirely – and the families it serves are better for it.
Casey DeSantis built something that every Republican governor in America should be studying.
The question isn't whether this model works.
Thirty thousand Floridians answered that already.
The question is how fast every other state copies it.
