A nine-year-old boy in Kissimmee called 911 because a dumbbell fell on his head.
His mom was across the country in Las Vegas – and had been for four nights.
What deputies found when they knocked on that door is exactly what happens when parents decide a Vegas work trip matters more than their kids.
Four Kids, No Adult, Four Nights
Deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office rolled up to the Kissimmee home shortly after 8:30 p.m. on October 21 and found four children inside – ages 9, 11, 12, and 14 – with no adults present.
Fire rescue transported the nine-year-old to Celebration Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
A deputy reached Irene Miller by phone.
She was in Las Vegas.
She had been there since October 18.
Her arrangement: a babysitter who drove up from Tampa each morning to help the kids get ready for school – then left.
No one was required to stay overnight.
So every night, four kids between the ages of 9 and 14 were alone in that house.
For four nights.
Arrested the Moment She Stepped Off the Plane
Deputies contacted the children's father, who agreed to take all four kids to his home while detectives made plans for Miller's return flight on October 23.
Body camera footage shows deputies approaching Miller on the jet bridge the moment she stepped off the plane from Las Vegas.
They escorted her through the terminal and placed her in handcuffs.
Miller, 50, was booked into the Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
Sheriff Chris Blackmon – appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis after the previous Osceola County sheriff was arrested on racketeering charges – made the department's position crystal clear: "The Osceola County Sheriff's Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children."
Zero ambiguity.
This Is Not a Florida Anomaly
Irene Miller is not the first person to leave kids home alone while flying to Las Vegas, and she will not be the last.
Another Florida woman – Jessica Copeland – was arrested after leaving a teenager and seven dogs home alone for two full weeks while she vacationed in Las Vegas.
An Ohio mother got house arrest after prosecutors proved she spent two nights in Miami while her children were home alone – despite her denying it to investigators.
A Chicago couple faced child endangerment charges after leaving a 12-year-old and a 9-year-old alone for two days while they took a Vegas trip.
Same story, different city, different year – every single time.
Florida has no law specifying a minimum age for leaving a child home alone, which creates a gray area in borderline cases – but four nights alone with no adult anywhere in the state, and a nine-year-old dialing 911 because he's hurt, isn't a borderline case.
The state defines inadequate supervision as leaving children without adult care suited to their age and needs – which is precisely what Florida's own child welfare agency says you cannot do.
DeSantis-appointed Sheriff Blackmon is rebuilding credibility at a sheriff's office that needed it badly – and making clear that Osceola County is not a place where parents fly to Vegas and leave elementary schoolers to fend for themselves at night.
Meanwhile, Irene Miller thought a morning babysitter was a substitute for a parent.
Her nine-year-old son, lying on the floor with a dumbbell on his skull and no adult anywhere in the state, found out that wasn't true.
