A Florida GOP lawmaker proposed one teacher loyalty oath bill that has left-wing activists absolutely losing their minds

Florida’s latest move to hold teachers accountable just sent the education establishment into full panic mode.

A Republican lawmaker filed legislation requiring classroom teachers to swear an oath defending the Constitution and teaching without political bias.

And a GOP lawmaker proposed one teacher loyalty oath bill that has left-wing activists absolutely losing their minds.

New legislation follows statewide crackdown on teacher misconduct

Republican state Representative Tom Fabricio filed House Bill 147 on Monday, requiring every public school classroom teacher to take a detailed oath before beginning their duties.¹

The legislation comes on the heels of a statewide investigation into teachers who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination on social media.

Last month, Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas sent a letter to all district superintendents warning that he would investigate "every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior" after some teachers posted what he called "despicable comments" celebrating Kirk’s death.²

Kamoutsas moved to revoke the teaching license of one Clay County elementary teacher who posted, "This may not be the obituary we were all hoping to wake up to, but this is a close second for me."³

The commissioner charged her with gross immorality, failing to protect student welfare, reduced effectiveness as an educator, and failing to distinguish personal views from those of a public educational institution.⁴

Over 500 complaints flooded the Clay County School District about this teacher’s social media post, forcing the district to increase security measures at taxpayer expense.⁵

Teachers across Florida discovered the hard way that celebrating political assassination crosses a line even the radical Left couldn’t defend.

The oath would require teachers to pledge nonpartisan instruction

The proposed oath goes beyond the generic pledge Florida already requires from state employees.

Fabricio’s bill mandates that classroom teachers swear to "support, protect, and defend the Constitution and government of the United States and the Constitution and government of the State of Florida."⁶

The oath specifically requires teachers to perform their duties "in a professional, independent, objective, and nonpartisan manner" while upholding "the highest standards of academic integrity and professional ethics."⁷

Teachers would have to pledge to "foster a respectful learning environment for all students" that promotes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning.⁸

The language mirrors oaths already required for lawyers, doctors, and public officials.⁹

Fabricio, who represents Miami Lakes and has served since 2020, is himself an attorney with extensive experience in professional ethics requirements.¹⁰

If the Florida Legislature passes HB 147 during the session beginning January 13th, the oath requirement takes effect July 1, 2026.¹¹

That timing gives every school district nearly a full year to implement the new requirement before the 2026-27 school year begins.

Florida continues aggressive education reforms despite leftist outrage

The timing of this bill isn’t coincidental – it follows years of Florida leading the nation in protecting students from political indoctrination.

The Legislature has already banned teaching about "divisive concepts" and "identity politics" in government schools.¹²

Governor Ron DeSantis publicly supported Kamoutsas’ crackdown on teachers celebrating Kirk’s murder, calling it "completely unacceptable" that educators would celebrate the assassination of a 31-year-old father of two young children.¹³

Nearly two-thirds of states have adopted some form of teacher loyalty oath since the first ones appeared during the Civil War in 1863.¹⁴

California, Georgia, and New York already require oaths to federal and state constitutions.¹⁵

Florida’s existing statute requires all state employees – including school board members and district staff – to take an oath supporting the U.S. and Florida constitutions.¹⁶

Fabricio’s bill simply extends that requirement specifically to classroom teachers while adding language about nonpartisan instruction and professional conduct.

The teacher union bosses are already squealing about "chilling effects" and comparing this to McCarthy-era witch hunts.

Andrew Spar, president of the Florida Education Association, warned that Kamoutsas was acting as "investigator, prosecutor, and judge" in investigations of teachers who posted about Kirk’s assassination.¹⁷

But here’s what the union won’t tell you – teachers celebrating political murder on social media is exactly the kind of conduct that destroys public trust in government schools.

Parents have every right to demand that the people teaching their children pledge to keep partisan politics out of the classroom.

If a teacher can’t swear an oath to teach objectively and uphold professional ethics, maybe they shouldn’t be shaping young minds in the first place.

Florida just proved once again that it’s willing to take on the education establishment when teachers cross the line from educators to political activists.

The radical Left had a free hand to indoctrinate children for decades while hiding behind academic freedom and First Amendment claims.

Those days are over in Florida, and other states are watching closely to see if this oath requirement becomes the new standard nationwide.
