Former Democrat megadonor creates a new political party in Florida
President Donald Trump’s victory in Florida in the 2016 Election was the beginning of the Democrat party’s downhill slide in the state.
Democrats have not won one statewide office in Florida since 2019, and that was the agriculture commissioner.
The party has become increasingly irrelevant under the leadership of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
He has helped move Florida from the country’s biggest battleground state to an increasingly bright shade of red.
Republicans control every statewide office in Florida, have supermajorities in both houses of the State Legislature, and have 1.1 million more registered voters than Democrats.
The 2024 Election was the first in decades that neither party spent any serious money contesting the Presidential contest in the state.
National Democrats are writing Florida off, which makes the tasks for the state’s Democrats even harder.
Wealthy trial lawyer John Morgan announced that he was launching a new political party in Florida.
“I am forming a new political party for those of us stuck in the middle. Our two-party system is broken due to Gerrymandering and divisive issues… both sides. No labels is not an option. Everyone wants a team or tribe. Ron Myers is my lawyer drafting the paperwork. Stay tuned,” Morgan wrote on X.
Morgan heads up the largest personal injury law firm in the country, Morgan & Morgan.
He left the Democrat Party after the 2024 Election because of his frustration over former Vice President Kamala Harris being installed as the candidate.
Morgan had previously been one of the biggest donors for the Democrat Party in Florida.
He has praised former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and former President Joe Biden in the past as well as helped them raise money.
The trial lawyer claimed he did not vote for Kamala or Trump last year.
“People… we are all on the same f—ing team. I didn’t vote for Trump, but I’m pulling like hell for Trump. I didn’t vote for Kamala either, btw. It’s time for a third choice. If the choice is only vanilla or chocolate… you never get to eat strawberry,” Morgan wrote.
John Morgan eyes a potential run in 2026
Morgan floated the idea of running for Governor in the 2026 Midterm Elections last year.
Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) is already in the race, and Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis is rumored to be seriously considering the race.
Democrats would start out as heavy underdogs, even if 2026 was a bad year for Republicans.
Florida is a large and expensive state to mount a statewide run in.
Morgan could run under the banner of his new party as a crypto-Democrat.
Senate Democrats have run independent candidates in states like Nebraska and Utah in recent years where their party’s brand is too toxic to win.
