Disney faced a massive backlash after it began pumping out woke TV shows and movies.
The company has been trying to do damage control.
And an actor made one surprising confession about Disney going woke that sent shockwaves.
A Disney actor was worried about starring in another woke TV show
Disney spent decades building a reputation as a company that delivered family-friendly movies and shows that delighted audiences.
The company made pushing a divisive left-wing political agenda its priority over entertaining audiences and has paid the price ever since.
Disney movies and TV shows have become commercial and critical failures after the company went woke.
An actor in a new series on the Disney+ streaming service admitted in an interview that he was worried about starring in another “woke and annoying” show by the company.
Voice actor Hudson Thames plays Peter Parker in the upcoming Marvel animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
He told Collider that before he read the script he was afraid he was walking into another woke disaster by Disney.
The Marvel franchise has been in a downward spiral after Disney began pushing a social justice message and featuring casts of all-female superheroes.
“My biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t,” Thames told Collider. “I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like, it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”
Disney has been under pressure to get its movie and TV business back on track after numerous flops that were criticized for being too woke.
Billionaire investor slammed Disney for being too woke
Disney faced a takeover attempt last year by billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz who ripped the direction of the company.
The company’s stock price has been down around $80 a share from its all-time high in early 2021.
Peltz told The Financial Times that Disney had become too “woke” and pointed to Marvel movies Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels which were dominated by female superheroes.
“People go to watch a movie or a show to be entertained,” Peltz explained. “They don’t go to get a message.”
“Why do I have to have a Marvel that’s all women?” Peltz added. “Not that I have anything against women, but why do I have to do that? Why can’t I have Marvels that are both?”
Even critics bashed The Marvels’ female superhero cast when it was released.
Associated Press film critic Lindsey Bahr accused the movie of “pandering.”
“As is often the case with Marvel’s girl power attempts, it feels a little pandering in all the wrong places and doesn’t really engage with any specific or unique female point of view,” Bahr stated.
Captain America star Anthony Mackie stepped in it recently for Disney when he said he did not associate the superhero he played with America.
“Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations,” Mackie said at a press event for the upcoming Captain America: A Brave New World.
Disney has become a case study on how to destroy a reputation that was earned over decades in a few short years.
