Bill Belichick proposed the NFL make one massive change because of Tom Brady

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback in NFL history.

His legacy looms large over professional football.

And Bill Belichick proposed the NFL make one massive change because of Tom Brady.

Bill Belichick says the NFL should rename the Lombardi trophy after Tom Brady

Every season NFL players compete for the chance to hold the Lombardi Trophy after winning the Super Bowl.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy was named after the legendary coach who led the Green Bay Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls in the 1960s.

It was named after him by the NFL following his death in 1970.

North Carolina head football coach Bill Belichick said the NFL should rename the Lombardi Trophy after his former quarterback Tom Brady on the Let’s Go podcast.

Belichick said that he learned from his time as the New York Giants defensive coordinator under head coach Bill Parcells that the key to success was putting great players in a position to succeed.

“You gotta have good players, and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win,” Belichick explained. “You wanna put ’em in a position where if they go out there and play well, they’ll have a chance to win. That’s what coach [Bill] Parcells taught me, is there’s always a way to win. You just gotta figure out what it is, and you have to give the players a chance.”

Host Jim Gray pointed out that the Lombardi Trophy for the Super Bowl champion is named after the coach, not Packers quarterback Bart Starr who led the franchise to the titles.

“Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy. He won seven of them,” Belichick said.

Belichick and Brady combined to win six Lombardi Trophies together during their time with the New England Patriots.

Belichick argues it is the players who make the difference

The North Carolina coach argued that it was the players who made the difference more than his coaching in the NFL.

“Players win games,” Belichick stated. “You can’t win games without good players. I don’t care who the coach is, it’s impossible. You can’t win without good players.”

He pointed to the players he had on his defense during his time with the Giants when he won two Super Bowls.

“You know, I found that out when I had (Lawrence) Taylor and (Carl) Banks and Harry Carson, Pepper Johnson, Jim Burt, Everson Walls, all those guys at the Giants,” Belichick recalled.

The same formula for success carried over to his tenure as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and the Patriots.

“And same thing when we got good at Cleveland and then at New England. I mean, it’s Brady, it’s (Willie) McGinest, it’s (Mike) Vrabel, it’s (Tedy) Bruschi, it’s Corey Dillon, it’s Randy Moss, Troy Brown, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison,” Belichick continued. “Those are guys that won the games, man. I didn’t make any tackles. I didn’t make any kicks. That was (Adam) Vinatieri that made that kick in four inches of snow.”

Bill Belichick is a believer in the old saying, “It’s no X and O’s, it’s Jimmy and Joes.”
