Casey DeSantis has been rumored to be looking at making the leap into politics.
She could run to succeed her husband, Ron DeSantis.
And Casey DeSantis said two words about running for governor that surprised everyone.
Casey DeSantis drops a big hint about running for governor
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will leave office in early January 2027 after two terms during which he helped transform the Sunshine State into a conservative bastion.
The race is already underway to replace him after Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) threw his hat in the ring with an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
Normally, an endorsement from Trump would be an insurmountable obstacle for any challengers in a Republican Primary.
But one candidate might have the popularity and name identification to make it a contest.
Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis was reportedly encouraged by donors to enter the governor’s race.
Ron DeSantis has not played down rumors that his wife could be looking at running to replace him.
Casey DeSantis spoke to the press for the first time since the rumors about her running for Governor.
She gave a strong indication that she would be getting into the race by quoting the late New York Yankees legend, Yogi Berra.
Ron and Casey DeSantis appeared at an event at the Florida International University to discuss cancer research and innovation funding.
A reporter asked if she was going to run for governor.
“I would say one thing, to quote the late, great, Yogi Berra,” Casey DeSantis replied. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
“You guys can read into that,” Ron DeSantis added.
That answer would seem to indicate that she is going to pull the trigger on a run.
Casey DeSantis is more conservative than her husband
Ron DeSantis recalled having dinner with his wife and the late talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh.
Limbaugh noted that the spouse is usually to the Left of the candidate and pulls them in that direction.
The talk radio show host marveled that this was one of the cases where the spouse was more conservative than the candidate.
“She’s more conservative than [I],” DeSantis stated. “What she’s done on this has been really inspirational – just how she handled the cancer has been inspirational.”
The Florida First Lady was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 and announced that she had beaten the disease in 2022.
Ron DeSantis praised the work his wife has done as First Lady on cancer and other initiatives.
“To parlay that into programs that are actually helping people and saving lives is extraordinary,” Ron DeSantis said. “She’s also came in as first lady and tackle things like behavioral health. That is not an easy subject, but if you look at what we’ve done, there’s been huge progress.”
Casey has worked with the Hope Florida program that uses charities and private sector resources to get Floridians off government assistance.
“I think it’s been tens of thousands of people who have been taken off means-tested welfare in Florida,” Ron DeSantis explained.
The Republican Primary for governor next year in Florida could be a heavyweight fight between Byron Donalds and Casey DeSantis.
