There is no denying that DeSantis has his work cut out for him if he hopes to catch up to Trump in the polls.
A slew of politically-motivated indictments against Trump by activist Democrat prosecutors have rallied the GOP base around the former President.
But now DeSantis is hard at work looking to close the gap in this key state.
For candidates seeking their party’s nomination for President, the importance of Iowa cannot be overstated.
Countless Presidential hopefuls have seen their White House dreams unceremoniously die after a poor showing in the Hawkeye State.
On the flip side, a candidate who is trailing nationally that pulls off an upset in the first in the nation caucus can pick up some serious momentum nationwide.
That’s why DeSantis is going all-in to win over caucus-goers in the state.
Just a day after the first debate, DeSantis visited Iowa where he attended a baseball game in Dyersville, where he engaged with Iowa GOP voters.
DeSantis has already made dozens of trips to Iowa this summer, visiting veterans’ organizations, the Iowa State Fair, and several Pizza Ranches.
“Iowans appreciate when you show up, and they expect you to show up. They expect you to earn it,” DeSantis said following a stop at a local VFW. “So that’s what we’re going to do.”
DeSantis plans to visit all 99 counties in the Hawkeye State, and is already halfway there, having visited 53.
Among Caucus-goers, Trump still has a healthy lead for their first choice.
42% listed Trump as their first pick, while 19% went with DeSantis.
However, 61% of caucus-goers said DeSantis was either their first choice or they were actively considering him, which is only 2% behind those who said the same of Trump.
Also 52% have said they are open to supporting someone other than their first pick.
Trump has made only a few stops in Iowa, seemingly relying on his current lead to hold.
DeSantis certainly has an opportunity to make Trump’s overconfidence his undoing in Iowa, and a win here would certainly prove that the Governor is still a serious contender, and would give him the momentum to achieve more victories leading up to the convention.
