Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is Donald Trump’s only real challenger.
And the popular Governor has been shoring up his conservative base.
But Donald Trump blasted Ron DeSantis for being too pro-life while making this wild claim.
The 2024 GOP nomination for President is in full swing.
And not surprisingly, Donald Trump is on the attack.
Attacking his biggest threat
Also not surprisingly, Trump is launching his most brutal attacks on DeSantis.
That’s because every poll shows DeSantis is the only potential GOP rival who can beat Trump for the nomination.
Trump has always made a point of trying to tear down his biggest threat, and this time that is clearly Ron DeSantis.
The latest attack comes in an interview with The Messenger.
Trump first made the claim that he is the one man responsible for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, which had legalized abortion.
While there is no doubt his Supreme Court picks certainly aided that effort, he seems to forget there were other, non-Trump appointees who actually led the effort.
“I’m the one . . .”
Trump said, “First of all, I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court Justices. Very few people have had that privilege, the honor, and they are terrific people. And they happen to believe that Roe v. Wade should not be there. It’s been now brought back to the states.”
Trump went on to explain why he is the one, and the only one, who made it happen.
“But I gave the pro-life people, and I’m the only one, again. I’m the only one that ever was able to do this. Nobody thought it was possible to do what I did with Roe v. Wade. And now because of what I did, we have a very powerful negotiating position. More powerful, frankly, than the other side.”
While his claim is certainly exaggerated, most pro-life activists wouldn’t argue with him on that point.
But it was what he did next that has further alienated the pro-life base, which is vital in a GOP Presidential Primary.
“Ron DeSantis has a big problem”
Showing that he doesn’t really understand the life issue, Trump then launched into an attack on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for being . . . too pro-life.
“And you know, Ron, if you take a look, he’s losing women voters like crazy, because there are four stories that I see before me, he has a big here’s one here in Newsweek. Ron DeSantis has a big problem with women voters. Now, I don’t do it for the women, for the men, I do what’s right, and I’ve always done, and I’ve always, I think it’s why I’m leading him by 40 and 50 points, and you see that, and I’m leading Biden by 11 points. I do what’s right for the country,” Trump said.
The former President was referring to DeSantis signing Florida’s strong pro-life legislation that bans most abortions in the Sunshine State after 6 weeks.
The bill was strongly supported by pro-life groups and activists and made DeSantis a hero in many pro-life activists’ eyes.
The only “problem” DeSantis has is he is a man who sticks to principles and doesn’t sway with the political winds.
And that is just not acceptable to Donald Trump.
That’s why he has a growing problem both with DeSantis, and with his once solid pro-life base.
