Florida Democrats think that their party is primed for a big political comeback.
They are riding piggyback on the momentum from Kamala Harris.
And Florida Democrats are ready to go to war with Ron DeSantis in one fight they will live to regret.
Florida Democrats want Kamala Harris to compete in the state
Democrats are head over heels for Vice President Kamala Harris after she became the party’s Presidential nominee.
The enthusiasm in the party has some Democrats dreaming big about the 2024 Election.
Kamala dropped out of the 2020 Democrat Presidential Primary before a single vote was cast when she was polling in the low single digits.
Now, Democrats see her as a political talent the equal of former President John F. Kennedy who could deliver a landslide victory in November.
Florida has transformed from the biggest swing state in the country to becoming a red state.
The political shift in the state had both parties thinking it was safely in former President Donald Trump’s column.
But Florida Democrats pressed the national party at the Democratic National Convention to invest resources in the state.
Democrats have not won one statewide election in Florida since former President Barack Obama carried the state in 2012.
State Senator Shevrin Jones (D-FL) told the Miami Herald that she has been making the case to Democrat bigwigs that the Sunshine State is in play.
“I think when we get there, it’s really going to solidify the case that we’ve been trying to make,” Jones said. “The meetings that I’m going to have — sitting down with donors and sitting down with party leaders — are to let them know that not only is Florida in play but can’t be ignored and should not be ignored.”
Jones admitted that political pundits have doubts about Florida’s competitiveness but investing in the state would be the first step to reviving Democrats’ fortunes there.
“The Republicans didn’t get here overnight, and it’s going to take us time to get there,” Jones explained. “We can’t neglect the resources that are needed in order to build that bench, in order to build that infrastructure.”
Florida Republicans have a built-in advantage
Florida Democratic Party chairwoman Nikki Fried said that Republicans are taking Florida for granted.
“There is a tremendous case to be made. And all of this is done without a true investment. This is all organic,” Fried told the Herald.
Democrats think that Kamala is a game-changing candidate who is going to upend the political map.
But they are running into a numbers problem in Florida that won’t be easy to solve.
Florida Republicans have one million more voters registered by party than Democrats.
Democrats had the greatest number of voters registered by party since the Civil War until 2021.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has overseen massive gains in registered Republican voters since he took office in 2019.
Trump has led in every public poll of the state this election cycle against Kamala and President Joe Biden.
Republicans would be thrilled if Florida Democrats decided to light money on fire trying to win the state.
