Florida homeowners are ready to fight this awful scam after an assist from Ron DeSantis

Jul 8, 2024

Ron DeSantis is making sure that crime does not pay in Florida.

Now residents of the Sunshine State are putting criminals on notice.

And Florida homeowners are ready to fight this awful scam after an assist from Ron DeSantis.

Florida homeowners can go after squatters under new law from Ron DeSantis

Squatting generated national headlines after an illegal alien went viral on social media providing instructions on how to do it to American homeowners.

Taking possession of a property that someone does not own by illegally entering it defies common sense.

In New York City, illegal aliens were breaking into properties to squat in them because city law allowed them to claim rights after 30 days.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis saw a problem and stepped up to take action.

He signed House Bill 621 into law this year to allow homeowners to work with the police to remove squatters.

“While other states are siding with the squatters, we are protecting property owners and punishing criminals looking to game the system,” DeSantis said when he signed the bill.

Florida has a large population of part-time residents who are especially susceptible to being targeted by squatters.

DeSantis explained the problem in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity earlier this year.

“We’ve got people that will be here for seven months of the year, and then they’ll go to Michigan or New York or even Canada. You come back after the summer and someone’s in your house, and then they just get to stay there for six months,” DeSantis stated. “Now in Florida, you call up, you fill out a form, the sheriff comes, and the sheriff kicks him out of your property.”

The Florida Governor explained that if private property rights are not protected then society is no longer free.

Anti-squatting law takes effect in Florida and the scam ends

The Sunshine State’s anti-squatting law took effect on July 1.

DeSantis vowed that Florida is “ending this squatter scam once and for all.”

Florida’s Eviction Law Firm attorney Kevin Fabrikant told Fox News Digital that Florida now has one of the fastest and easiest processes for removing squatters in the country.

In blue states like California and New York, it can take months and thousands of dollars for homeowners to have them removed.

Now residents of Florida can skip the legal system under certain conditions and work directly with law enforcement to remove the squatters.

“The squatter must have unlawfully entered the property, must have already been asked to leave by the homeowner, cannot be a current or former tenant of the home, and cannot be an immediate relative of the homeowner looking to get them off their property,” Fox News reported.

Sheriff’s offices require a removal fee of around $100.

“If you’re a squatter, I wouldn’t come to Florida to live,” Fabrikant said.

Ron DeSantis quickly delivered another commonsense solution to a problem plaguing the country.
