That’s why Florida residents let out a sigh of relief after this phone call between Ron DeSantis and Joe Biden took place.
Ron DeSantis pressed the pause button on his Presidential campaign to focus his attention on making preparations for Tropical Storm Idalia, which could reach landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday.
On Monday, DeSantis held a press conference where he announced evacuation orders for certain gulf coast counties.
“If you look at how the models are, there’s a general agreement on the track that it’s going to take, there’s a lot of agreement that it’s going to be somewhere between north of Tampa and Tallahassee, but anything that wobbles with this storm could could change that,” DeSantis said. “Our message from the state is to heed those warnings, particularly if you’re in the Zone A barrier islands, very low lying places, this is going to be something that you are going to face impacts of, even if the storm is off the coast here in the Tampa Bay area, you’re still going to see significant impacts from the surge.”
DeSantis declared a state of emergency on Sunday, but it required Joe Biden’s approval before the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could help coordinate relief and provide assistance.
But Joe Biden considers Ron DeSantis a top enemy and has already proven that he’s willing to do anything to inflict damage on his political opponents.
During a press conference on Monday, DeSantis urged Biden to put politics aside.
“When you have situations like this, you’ve got to put the interests of the people first,” DeSantis said. “I mean, there’s time and a place to have a political season.”
“We have a responsibility as Americans to come together and do what we can to mitigate any damage and to protect people,” he said. “So that’s what I’ve done on all these different issues, and that’s what I’ll continue to do. When you have these situations, you’ve got to step up.”
For once, Biden agreed with DeSantis.
And on Monday Ron DeSantis announced that he spoke with Joe Biden on the phone and told Floridians he approved the emergency declaration.
DeSantis concluded his conference by repeating his warning to Florida residents that “this is going to be a major impact.”
