The Free State of Florida has become a conservative bastion under Ron DeSantis.
Not everyone in the Republican Party is happy with the direction of the state.
And Florida RINOs are facing one awful decision after a Ron DeSantis’ ally started this fight.
Florida lawmaker files bill to end red flag gun confiscation
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has put his state at the leading edge of the conservative movement.
But the Sunshine State has trailed other red states in Second Amendment freedoms.
RINOS in the Florida Legislature passed a slew of gun control legislation after the Parkland shooting in 2018 including red flag gun confiscation.
The crown jewel for gun grabbers is a red flag gun confiscation law.
Red flag laws strip law-abiding gun owners of their constitutionally protected due process rights by allowing a judge to issue an order to confiscate their firearms because someone claimed they are a threat.
Gun owners do not have to be accused of a crime to have their firearms seized.
An angry ex-wife can hurl an accusation, and they are stripped of their Second Amendment rights.
Gun owners had to deal with a mountain of red tape and expensive legal fees to get their guns back and their rights restored.
State Representative Joe Rudman (R-FL) filed a bill to bring this unconstitutional scam to an end for the 2025 session of the Florida Legislature.
His bill would repeal the red flag confiscation law and make Florida an open carry state.
Florida is one of a handful of states including California and New York where open carry is illegal under any circumstance.
“Not only does my legislation repeal the unconstitutional red flag laws that have been in place since 2018, but it also allows for open carry of firearms in the state,” Rudman said. “It is time for our state to act less like California, and to act more like the Free State of Florida. I look forward to our state once again earning the title of the Gunshine State, where citizens are no longer asked to trade God-given freedoms for a politician’s empty promise of security.”
RINOs given a tough choice
Republican State Senate President Ben Albritton previously said he would not support open carry legislation because some Florida sheriffs oppose it.
“Let me be clear about this, I’ve supported law enforcement my entire life. It’s the way I was raised, and I’ve been super-consistent as a legislator to support law enforcement in Florida. And I’d encourage you to check that record,” Albritton told reporters. “And I stand with them today in opposition. They oppose it. I trust my law-enforcement officials, and that’s where I stand.”
DeSantis has supported open carry legislation and opposed the state’s red flag gun confiscation law.
If a roll call vote on the bill gets forced that would put lawmakers on record.
They would either have to vote to support the Second Amendment or oppose it in a red state.
That would open them up to Republican Primary challenges and hurt their chances of running for higher office.
