A classroom is supposed to be a safe space for students.
But they often have no idea who is teaching them.
And Florida students were scared when their teacher was arrested for one awful crime.
Florida middle school teacher arrested at immigration hearing
A middle school science teacher is facing deportation after he was arrested by Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) agents at an immigration hearing.
The teacher is employed by the Miami-Dade Public Schools and reportedly has lived in the United States since he was a child.
United Teachers of Dade, the teachers union, claimed that the teacher had the proper documentation to work at the school.
The teacher is allegedly a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient.
Former President Barack Obama illegally created the DACA program to prevent illegal aliens who were brought to the United States as children from being deported.
DACA recipients receive a work permit, and a Social Security number, and can apply for a driver’s license.
The fate of DACA is being decided in a legal battle in federal courts.
United Teachers of Dade President Karla Hernandez-Mets told the Miami New Times that the teacher tried “to do the right thing” by showing up to his immigration hearing.
The Miami-Dade Public School District has a large immigrant and illegal alien population who attend its schools.
Some 25% of the students in the school district are still learning the English language.
“It’s really shocking to kids, and I’m sure they are talking about it with their parents and that’s created an even greater level of anxiety for that population of students,” Hernandez-Mats claimed. “Because they’re thinking, if it can happen to my teacher, it can happen to anybody in my family.”
One mystery remains about the teacher facing deportation
The Trump administration is in its first phase of mass deportations targeting illegal aliens who have committed crimes or a national security threat.
DACA protection can be revoked if an illegal alien commits a crime or lies on their application.
The teacher being arrested at an immigration hearing raises questions about whether he had a criminal record.
Miami-Dade school board member Luis Santos said “The fear is real” after the teacher was arrested by ICE.
The Trump administration changed the rules of engagement for ICE agents to allow them to make arrests at schools and hospitals.
“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest,” a Department of Homeland Security spokesman told the Miami Herald.
Illegal aliens would use these protected areas to hide from the authorities.
DeSantis supported Florida state and local law enforcement in assisting ICE with arrests in schools.
“We will affirmatively assist these operations across the state,” DeSantis said. “It will probably be more dependent on them to see how they want to go in or what they want to do.”
“What Biden did, they said you can’t do sensitive [areas], and they drew big circles around any church, any school. The problem is, once you’ve done that, there’s almost no place that you can do it,” DeSantis explained. “You could conduct a raid in the woods somewhere.”
There will be no safe spaces for illegal aliens in the Sunshine State.
