Florida has been trending red for years now.
Democrats keep hoping the Sunshine State will swing back their way.
And Florida voters delivered one shock to Democrats that has Ron DeSantis grinning from ear to ear.
Florida voters approve of DeSantis despite media attacks
The media has been relentlessly attacking Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for years, painting him as an authoritarian who’s destroying the state.
But a new poll from the Florida Chamber of Commerce shows that Floridians aren’t buying what the left-wing media is selling.
The poll found that Governor DeSantis has a solid 54% approval rating among Florida voters, despite the constant barrage of negative coverage from leftist outlets.
That’s not the only good news for conservatives in the Sunshine State.Â
The same poll showed that Floridians are also backing President Donald Trump, with 51% supporting his work in Washington, D.C.
“The Florida Chamber’s new poll also finds Floridians remain optimistic about the direction of Florida, with 49% saying Florida is heading in the right direction, while 43% believe things are on the wrong track,” the Chamber said in a press release Thursday.
Florida’s economic freedom policies getting results
While leftists tear their hair out over DeSantis’ conservative policies, everyday Floridians are reaping the benefits of living in a state committed to economic freedom.
The poll, conducted by Tallahassee-based Cherry Communications, surveyed 605 likely voters by phone between May 2-10.Â
The sample included 264 Republicans, 218 Democrats, and 123 third- and no-party residents, with a 4-percentage-point margin of error.
Despite DeSantis’ recent sparring with House Republicans on various issues, including tax policies and his wife’s Hope Florida charity, voters still approve of the job he’s doing for the state.
At the same time, Floridians are backing President Trump’s aggressive approach to immigration enforcement and his use of executive power to reshape the federal government during his first 100 days back in office.
Voters support tax cuts for businesses and families
The Chamber’s poll also revealed strong support for cutting taxes in Florida, with 53% of voters ready to eliminate the state’s business rent tax – a burdensome levy that only exists in Florida.
“With all Florida has done right, opportunities remain at the state level to make our tax environment even more competitive,” Mark Wilson, President and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, said. “Most notably, the state should eliminate the business rent tax or sales tax on commercial leases, which places Florida businesses at a disadvantage compared to businesses in every other state. The Florida Chamber has been working for nearly a decade to reduce this Florida-only tax from 6% to 2%, and hopes this is the year this burdensome tax on local businesses is repealed once and for all.”
The poll also found tremendous support for making President Trump’s federal tax cuts permanent instead of letting them expire.Â
A solid 57% of voters support extending these cuts, including 87% of Republicans and 55% of no-party voters.
Even 23% of Democrats support extending Trump’s tax cuts, showing how popular these economic policies are with everyday Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
According to the Tax Foundation, extending these cuts would mean a $4.5 trillion loss in revenue from 2025 through 2034.Â
However, the resulting economic growth would offset about $710 billion of those losses.
The latest version being considered in the House would cut revenue by $4 trillion over the same period while generating similar economic growth.
While the left-wing media continues to bash both DeSantis and Trump, this poll shows that their economic policies remain popular with voters who care more about their wallets than woke ideology.
DeSantis and Trump might be rivals for the Republican nomination, but they both share a commitment to conservative governance that’s clearly resonating with Floridians.
The alarming truth for Democrats is that Florida – once considered a premier swing state – is now firmly in the Republican column, and these numbers suggest it’s going to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
