Friendships between members of the opposite sex are complicated and often lead to problems.
It usually goes south when one person wants to be more than friends.
And police were shocked by what this Florida woman did with a garden hoe after her date canceled plans for dinner.
Most people become close friends with members of the same sex.
Men generally hang out with other men and women hang out with other women.
When a man and a woman are close friends, one of them usually develops feelings for the other that go beyond friendship.
And that can lead to heartbreak, or sometimes violence as a Florida man learned.
Around 3 a.m. on February 11, deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) responded to a call in reference to a burglary.
The incident began the day before when a Florida man did not show up for his dinner plans with 47-year-old Melanie Davis.
Davis and the man had been friends for a year, but she still flew into a rage when he canceled dinner plans on Monday.
At 3 a.m. the next morning, Davis showed up at the man’s home and started “yelling and screaming from outside his fence.”
“Davis was not happy, so at about 3:00 a.m., she went to the victim’s Frostproof residence and yelled at him out by his fence,” PCSO reported.
Davis told the man that he owed her money for a crossbow she purchased.
When he told her he did not have any money, she scaled the fence and busted through the man’s door to see if he had any company over that night.
After the man demanded she leave his house, the situation escalated into violence.
Davis grabbed a garden hoe and slashed the man across his left arm, which caused serious injury.
But she was not done.
She also started punching the man before hitting him with an aluminum trash can lid and throwing various objects at him, such as a small pipe wrench.
“At that time, Davis armed herself with a garden hoe, and hit the victim with it, causing a serious laceration to his arm,” PCSO reported.
Davis finally left the man’s home.
At that point, the injured man went to another neighbor’s house and asked for a ride to the emergency room.
The neighbor told officers that the victim was “covered in blood” when he showed up at her front door.
The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for his injury.
Deputies from the PCSO interviewed the victim after he left the hospital.
The man denied “ever being in a dating relationship” with Davis but admitted that they had engaged in “mutual sex in the past.”
Apparently, this is not the first time Davis turned violent.
He told police that the two argued a few days earlier after she accused him of “having her keys.”
The man said she whacked him “in the back of his head with a lock.”
Davis told detectives that she did climb his fence and engage in a “physical altercation” with the man.
She said she was “not happy” about him canceling their dinner plans on Monday and went to confront him.
“PCSO deputies arrested Melanie Davis, took her to the Polk County Jail, and charged her with armed burglary with battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, simple battery, and criminal mischief,” PCSO reported.
