Ron DeSantis is clearly an America First candidate.
If he hopes to catch up to Trump in the polls, he needs to make the case to voters how he can better deliver the America First agenda than former President Trump.
And Ron DeSantis answered the big question that’s on the mind of every GOP voter.
DeSantis’ path to the GOP nomination hinges on winning over voters who previously were on the Trump train.
He is unlikely to garner any support from the ever-shrinking, neoconservative, Never-Trump wing of the party, especially when they have candidates like Chris Christie, Nikki Haley, and Mike Pence to choose from.
That can mean at times walking a tightrope.
He doesn’t want to alienate Trump supporters by heavily going on the attack against the former President, but at the same time he needs to draw a contrast and demonstrate why he is the better choice.
And the Governor did a good job in doing so recently when responding to this voter’s question.
Ethan Masters asked DeSantis at an event in Iowa what is his main selling point for why voters should choose him over Trump.
DeSantis responded, “Well, I think a few things. One is, I think I’m much more likely to actually get elected, which is very important. I could serve two terms. He’d be a lame duck on Day 1 even if he could get elected. I have a track record of appointing really good people to office. I think he appointed a lot of duds to office, and it really hurt his ability to get his agenda done. I also think I’m more likely to follow through on doing what I said I would do. You look in Florida, everything I promised, I did. I never made a promise that I didn’t follow through on, and that’s just how I am. I am not going to sit there and tell you something that you want to hear to try to get your vote, and then get in and just forget that it ever happened.”
On DeSantis’ first point, the numbers back him up.
DeSantis polls better than Trump against Biden in several swing states.
While the Democrats’ legal attacks against Trump have boosted him among GOP Primary voters, facing several charges isn’t likely to be a positive for him among American swing voters.
Not to mention, Trump already lost to Biden once.
Being able to serve two terms is another important point.
If DeSantis is elected, he will have the advantage of incumbency in securing a second term, rather than putting Republicans in an open seat situation four years from now when the Democrats likely will have found a stronger candidate than Joe Biden.
But most importantly is the fact that DeSantis has a proven record of delivering on what he promises.
While Trump loyalists will try to tell you that Trump has a proven track record and DeSantis is just talk, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
DeSantis has delivered more on conservative priorities than any other Governor in the nation.
The Governor has won key victories in Florida on defending life, the right to bear arms, and pushing back against woke corporations.
The fact remains that Trump failed to deliver on his biggest campaign promises, like building the wall and draining the Swamp.
Only a small fraction of the border wall was constructed during Trump’s first four years and his administration actually gave jobs to many of the D.C. Swamp creatures.
Conservatives have a number of good reasons to switch their support from Trump to DeSantis, but it’s up to the Governor to make the case over the next several months.
