DeSantis champions homeschooling at Florida conference
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been on the front lines fighting back against the Left’s attempt to indoctrinate children with woke ideology.
He’s established his state as the nation’s leader in educational freedom, putting parents back in charge of their children’s education.
DeSantis spoke at the Florida Homeschool Convention in Kissimmee on Friday where he shared some impressive statistics about the growth of homeschooling in the Sunshine State.
“In my first five years as governor, the number of students in home education increased by nearly 60 percent,” DeSantis announced on social media following his speech. “Homeschooling in Florida continues to grow, as we have empowered families to choose the path that best meets their children’s needs.”
During his address to the Florida Parent Educators Association, DeSantis emphasized the importance of education in developing informed citizens.
“We have an obligation that this education, whatever form it takes, from homeschooling to traditional public school, that we’re doing what we need to do to prepare our students to be citizens of this republic, that they understand the core, foundational principles that the United States of America was founded upon,” he said.
DeSantis has consistently fought for parental rights
The spike in homeschooling enrollment comes as no surprise given DeSantis’ strong track record of championing parental rights in education.
Since taking office, he’s systematically dismantled the Left’s stranglehold on Florida’s education system.
In 2022, DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education law that prohibits schools from teaching children in kindergarten through third grade about transgenderism and other sexuality-related issues.
The following year, he approved an $8,000 voucher program for families who want school choice options.
DeSantis also signed a curriculum transparency law requiring public schools to make classroom materials available for parental review.
He’s successfully purged Critical Race Theory and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives from educational institutions across the state.
Parents are fleeing government schools across America
Florida’s homeschooling boom reflects a growing national trend of parents taking back control of their children’s education.
According to the Home School Legal Defense Association, the most restrictive states for homeschooling include New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Connecticut – all Democrat-controlled states that prioritize teachers unions over parental rights.
These restrictions haven’t stopped the homeschooling movement from gaining momentum nationwide.
The National Home Education Research Institute reports that homeschooling has been growing at a rate of 2% to 8% annually for years, but that growth accelerated dramatically during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many parents got their first look at what public schools were actually teaching during remote learning, and they didn’t like what they saw.
The Biden administration has consistently sided with teachers unions over parents, even directing the FBI to investigate parents who spoke out at school board meetings as potential “domestic terrorists.”
Meanwhile, states like Florida continue to lead the way in educational freedom, with DeSantis setting a model that other Republican governors are beginning to follow.
As the 2026 midterm elections approach, education promises to remain a critical issue for voters across the country.
