New York City now has a mayor who watches a masked activist declare evictions "violence" – and smiles.
That scene played out Thursday when Zohran Mamdani unveiled his "Rental Ripoff Report," a 68-page socialist wish list targeting the city's landlords.

Mamdani Stood Behind Her and Smiled
Antonia Marrero, a member of the Housing Organizers for People Empowerment Tenant Union, stepped to the podium at Mamdani's housing press conference and told the crowd that evictions are "violence."
Not a metaphor for hardship.
Not a rhetorical flourish about policy.
Violence.
Mamdani stood behind Marrero and smiled as she characterized the court-supervised eviction process as violence.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis posted the clip to X and nailed it in four words: "Theater of the Absurd."
Heritage Foundation senior fellow Mike Gonzalez compared the scene to "a scene out of a Batman movie."
That's what the largest city in America has become six months into socialist rule.
Marrero's remarks weren't an accident or a rogue activist hijacking the mic – this was Mamdani's event, Mamdani's podium, Mamdani's message, and his administration's top housing official, Cea Weaver, was standing right there beside him.

Weaver, the director of the Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants, has publicly declared that private property and homeownership are "weapons of White supremacy."
She has called for efforts to "impoverish the white middle class."
She has endorsed electing communists.
Mamdani appointed her anyway.
This is not a fringe voice that snuck into City Hall.
This is the architect of New York City's housing policy.

The "Rental Ripoff Report" she helped design contains 23 proposals that treat every landlord in New York as a criminal – including requiring landlords to pay tenant credit-check fees, mandating AI disclosure rules for rental photos, and pushing formal legal recognition for radical tenant unions like the one that sent Marrero to that podium.
History Already Ran This Experiment and It Failed Every Time
New York City's rent control history isn't a mystery.
Economic research on San Francisco's rent controls found they reduced rental housing supply by 15 percent, drove city-wide rents up over 5 percent, and killed housing turnover – the exact opposite of what the policy promised.
When Cambridge, Massachusetts finally repealed rent control in 1994, property values jumped 45 percent – and economists discovered the program had silently destroyed $2 billion in value for local property owners.
In New York itself, a 1992 study found rent control caused a 20 percent reduction in available rental units.
The American Enterprise Institute put it plainly this year: Mamdani's plan could collapse the city's housing market under the weight of government control – a market that already has half a million New Yorkers living in federally monitored public housing riddled with mold, lead paint, broken elevators, and pest infestations.
The Heritage Foundation's economists have said the same thing for decades: price controls don't solve housing shortages, they create them.
Freeze rents, and landlords stop maintaining buildings.

That's not theory – that's the South Bronx in the 1970s, when New York's rent control policies left entire city blocks looking like bombed-out ruins.
This Is the Endgame and They're Not Hiding It
RedState's Bonchie spelled out exactly what Mamdani is doing: "He 'freezes' rent, which means some landlords can't afford to do repairs or keep renters, and then people get evicted. Then he weaponizes that anger in his favor. The end goal is confiscation. Manipulative and sick."
That's the playbook.
Hold "Rental Ripoff Hearings" to brand landlords as criminals.
Stage press conferences where masked activists call evictions violence while the mayor grins in the background.
Then use the outrage to justify government seizure of private housing stock.
New York City already owns 177,000 units of public housing so badly mismanaged it operates under a federal monitor – and Mamdani's answer is to give the government more.
Your neighbors in New York voted for a self-described democratic socialist who spent his first six months freezing rents, empowering radical tenant unions, appointing a communist-sympathizer to run housing policy, and staging press conferences where eviction is declared a form of violence.
Democrats in every other major city are watching this and taking notes.
If they think it's working – and the national left increasingly does – Chicago is next.
Then Los Angeles.
Then wherever you live.
DeSantis was right to call it Theater of the Absurd.
The only question is whether the rest of the country wakes up before the show comes to their town.
