Ron DeSantis Called the 2026 Midterms an Extinction Event and Explained Why Florida Was the Only State That Survived

Nov 8, 2026

Texas is gone.

The state Republicans thought was untouchable just handed Democrats the governor's mansion, the US Senate seat, and four Supreme Court justices in a single night.

Florida is the last major red state standing – and Ron DeSantis just explained why.

The Night Schumer Has Been Waiting For

"Against all odds, we Democrats have won the Senate!" Schumer declared in his victory speech Wednesday, after Democrats flipped Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

That's what surrender looks like from the other side.

Democrats now control both chambers of Congress for the first time since the Biden years, and every Trump priority – judicial confirmations, spending bills, every piece of the America First agenda – is now subject to Schumer's veto.

DeSantis called it what it was.

"I've never seen in a year that was worse for Republicans across the board in a midterm since I've been on God's green earth," he said Wednesday.

He called it close to an extinction-level event.

Florida Held the Line

While every other major state crumbled, Florida Republicans held every statewide office, kept their Senate seat, and lost only a single state Senate seat.

DeSantis explained exactly how.

He told Florida's congressional candidates before the election to look at Trump's 2024 margin in their district – and subtract at least ten points.

That was the line of scrimmage.

Trump carried Florida by 13 points in 2024.

The new governor won by just one.

The swing was real, but it was half what hit Texas and Ohio.

The key was delivering results before voters ever walked in the door.

"You're only going to keep that if you continue to deliver results for people," DeSantis said.

Florida cut property taxes.

Florida crushed COVID mandates.

Florida sent illegals to Martha's Vineyard and dared the left to complain.

Republicans in Texas cut deals and softened edges.

Abbott, in Trump's own words on Truth Social, "became a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life."

Florida fought. Texas flinched.

The Warning Every Republican Needs to Hear

DeSantis was issuing a warning, not just an autopsy.

Florida is now the only state among the top ten largest that Republicans still control.

One state is the last anchor.

And even Florida is not immune.

"It's not like when things are negative in the atmosphere that we're just somehow hermetically sealed from that," DeSantis said, pushing back against any Republican who thinks Florida's strength is permanent.

The blue wave punished every state where Republicans governed with timidity – where they abandoned the America First agenda the moment it became politically inconvenient.

Voters didn't turn left because they suddenly love open borders and green energy mandates.

They turned on Republicans who stopped fighting.

That cowards lose is the actual lesson of November 2026.

What Schumer Gets to Do Now

Here is what Republicans just handed Chuck Schumer.

He can block every Trump judicial nomination.

He can strangle every spending bill.

He has already vowed to run "legislative razor wire" around any Trump move that defies the will of voters.

The man now controlling the United States Senate was screaming "wow, wow, wow" at a microphone twelve hours ago.

That happened because Republican candidates in Texas, Ohio, and Kansas forgot the lesson DeSantis spent eight years proving – that voters will show up for a fighter, and they will stay home for a moderate.

Florida held.

The question is whether anyone in the Republican Party is paying attention before Schumer gets comfortable.
