Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump are increasingly coming into conflict over the 2024 GOP Presidential nomination.
As DeSantis creeps closer to an official announcement he is facing more attacks.
And now Ron DeSantis drew one 2024 line in the sand with Donald Trump that no one saw coming.
Traditionally the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) served as a venue for potential Presidential candidates to test their message in front of a crowd of enthusiastic grassroots supporters.
And while Donald Trump will headline the annual confab, Ron DeSantis is skipping the event.
The Hill reports:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) will skip this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), according to a person familiar with the plans.
The likely 2024 Republican presidential hopeful is opting instead to head off on a jam-packed travel schedule that includes several stops in Florida to promote his new book, as well as GOP dinners in Texas and an appearance at the Club for Growth’s annual donor retreat.
CPAC is also under fire over allegations the American Conservative Union’s President Matt Schlaap groped a male staffer who worked for Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign.
Instead of appearing at CPAC – which has long been associated with the GOP establishment – DeSantis serves as the drawing card for the conservative Club for Growth’s donor retreat, which is being held in DeSantis’ home state of Florida.
POLITICO reports:
While Donald Trump headlines CPAC’s large annual confab of activists, conservative media and firebrands in Washington, D.C., Ron DeSantis is set to be the main draw at the Club for Growth’s private retreat for donors in Palm Beach. The dueling events come as the Republican party stares down a fraught nominating process.
Donald Trump – who’s had an up and down relationship with the Club for Growth – slammed the group for inviting DeSantis to speak to their donors.
“Failed former Congressman David McIntosh and his Globalist friends at Club for No Growth, who fought me all the way in 2016, and LOST, and then fought me again in 2020 Senate Races in Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, New Hampshire, plus more, and LOST AGAIN, are now threatening to spend money against me early because their new boy, Ron DeSanctus, the man who wants to cut Social Security and MediCare, has dropped so drastically in the Polls to me. No Growth Members know there will be RETRIBUTION!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
There are powerful factions in the conservative movement that support Trump’s policies, but want to move on to a different leader for the party.
Trump’s candidates losing in the Midterm election was the final straw for many.
And an increasing number of conservatives are looking at Ron DeSantis as that leader.
