Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis look like the top two contenders for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.
Trump is in the race and DeSantis is rumored to jump in this summer.
But now Ron DeSantis finally did the one thing that Donald Trump never expected.
Ron DeSantis finally responded to Donald Trump’s escalating series of jabs as polls show DeSantis leading Trump in a potential 2024 match up.
A reporter asked DeSantis to respond to comments Trump made on a campaign swing to South Carolina where Trump accused DeSantis of disloyalty for wanting to run for President in 2024.
“Ron would have not been Governor if it wasn’t for me,” Trump said of the fact that Trump’s endorsement of DeSantis in the 2018 Florida Gubernatorial primary proved decisive.
“So when I hear he might run, I consider that very disloyal,” Trump added.
Trump’s comments came days before two new polls came out showing growing momentum behind a DeSantis 2024 candidacy.
A Bulwark poll found DeSantis leading Trump 52 to 30 in a hypothetical matchup.
Another survey from the South Carolina Policy Council shows DeSantis leading Trump 52 to 33 percent in that critical primary state.
DeSantis responded to Trump by essentially saying “scoreboard” and noting that he won re-election in a landslide leaving the obvious comparison to Donald Trump who failed to win a second term.
“I roll out of bed. I have people attacking me from all angles,” DeSantis began. “It’s been happening for many, many years.”
“When you’re an elected executive, you have to make all kinds of decisions. You got to steer that ship. And the good thing is, is that the people are able to render a judgment on that — whether they reelect you or not,” DeSantis added.
DeSantis pointed to the fact that he won the largest percentage of the vote – over 59 percent – of any Republican Governor candidate in the state’s history.
“And I’m happy to say, you know, in my case, not only did we win reelection. We won with the highest percentage of the vote that any Republican Governor candidate has in the history of the state of Florida,” DeSantis concluded. “We won by the largest raw vote margin — over 1.5 million votes — than any Governor candidate has ever had in Florida history.”
It was only a matter of time before DeSantis responded to Trump.
And DeSantis’ message for the 2024 campaign is going to sound similar as DeSantis’ message to Republican voters is that he is the conservative fighter who has won and can win again.
