Disney thought it was going to get one over on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
But that plan backfired.
And now Ron DeSantis has a nasty surprise for Disney that will hit the woke company where it hurts.
Disney learned that going woke means going broke.
After Disney criticized legislation in Florida that would prevent teachers from grooming children in grades K-3 with sexualized lesson plans about transgenderism, Governor DeSantis signed legislation that would end Disney’s special privileges.
Since the late 1960s, Disney’s operated as essentially its own government in the Reedy Creek District.
The bill Governor DeSantis signed would dissolve the Reedy Creek District in June 2023.
Critics falsely claimed this bill would amount to a massive tax cut for Disney with the left-wing corporation’s tax obligations shifting to local taxpayers.
Governor DeSantis explained that would not be the case as the plan is for the state to assume control of the Reedy Creek District to ensure that Disney pays its taxes.
“Even though there are ways you could potentially have local communities absorb jurisdiction over Disney – after seeing them threatening to raise taxes on their citizens, we are not going to be in a situation where we’re just going to be giving them local control,” DeSantis stated.
“[It’s] more likely that the state will simply assume control and make sure that we’re able to impose the law and make sure we’re collecting the taxes,” DeSantis added.
Governor DeSantis also assured Floridians that they would not be on the hook for Disney’s one billion dollar debt obligation.
“With Reedy Creek, the path forward is Disney will not control its own government in the state of Florida. Disney will have to follow the same laws that every other company has to follow in the state of Florida. They will pay their fair share of taxes and they will be responsible for paying the debts,” DeSantis added.
DeSantis explained that this bill was about putting Disney on an even playing field with every other company in Florida.
“At the end of the day, all we’re doing is putting them on a level playing field with all the other companies in Florida, making sure there’s no special privileges, no special deals, and that debt will be honored,” DeSantis concluded.
Disney wanted to enter the political realm.
But when a company wants to turn into a political actor and criticize one party, members of that party are going to question why that company gets special deals and kickbacks.
In doing so, Governor DeSantis provided a blueprint for Republicans to fight back against woke corporations.
