Florida Governor Ron DeSantis won’t back down in any fight.
The latest battle could determine control of the House of Representatives.
And Ron DeSantis hit Nancy Pelosi with a massive surprise that could put her out of a job.
Florida is one of five states yet to produce a map for Congressional Districts for the next decade.
That’s because Ron DeSantis is fighting for a fair map as opposed to one that allows Democrats to win undeserved seats.
Governor DeSantis repeatedly rejected maps drawn by the state legislature because they include racial gerrymanders.
DeSantis instead pushed for a map that broke up the fifth and tenth Congressional Districts – two districts drawn specifically to elect black representatives – as unconstitutional racial gerrymanders.
But – surprisingly – it is Republicans in the state legislature fighting DeSantis on this front.
“We would have to try again to pass a map that the governor would be interested in signing,” Republican State Senator Ray Rodrigues told CNN. “The maps that would have the best chance of standing up to legal challenge are maps that are passed by both houses of the legislature and signed by the governor.”
Governor DeSantis explained he just wants a map that passes legal muster.
“Our goal in all of this is to have a constitutional map,” Governor DeSantis declared.
This fight has national implications.
Democrats gamed the redistricting process in states run by Republicans to use partisan courts to impose maps that are drawn specifically to allow Democrats to win more seats in red states.
In blue states like New York and Illinois, Democrats state legislatures ruthlessly eliminated Republican districts.
The total effect was even though Republicans controlled the ability to draw the maps for more than twice as many seats as Democrats, Democrats ended the redistricting process gaining four to five new seats.
That’s important because Republicans only need to flip five seats to win back the majority.
Democrats need any advantage they can get.
Ron DeSantis fighting for a fair map in Florida that eliminates racial gerrymanders wipes out the Democrats manipulating the system to pick up seats in other red states.
That’s because the fair map DeSantis proposed gives Republicans the ability to win 20 of the 29 Congressional Seats in Florida.
And that could crush the Democrats’ dreams of rigging the redistricting process to keep Nancy Pelosi in power.
