Ron DeSantis just left Donald Trump fuming after this surprising poll result

May 27, 2025

A new poll out of Florida is driving a wedge between two of the biggest names in Republican politics.

The rift between these two political heavyweights just got even wider.

And Ron DeSantis just left Donald Trump fuming after this surprising poll result.

While Donald Trump celebrates his first 100 days back in the White House, a new poll suggests the President may not be the most popular Republican in the Sunshine State.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce released polling data that shows Governor Ron DeSantis enjoying a higher approval rating than Trump among Florida voters.

According to the poll conducted by Cherry Communications, DeSantis sits at a comfortable 54% approval rating in his home state, while Trump trails slightly behind at 51% after his first 100 days back in office.

This three-point gap might seem small, but it represents a significant development in a state Trump won decisively in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.

The two Republican leaders had a contentious relationship during the 2024 primary season before DeSantis eventually dropped out and endorsed Trump.

“As we move further into 2025 with President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in the books, the most recent Florida Chamber statewide poll finds both Governor Ron DeSantis and President Trump with high job approval numbers,” the Florida Chamber noted in their release.

The poll also reveals that Floridians remain cautiously optimistic about their state’s direction under DeSantis’s leadership, with 49% saying Florida is heading in the right direction compared to 43% who believe things are on the wrong track.

When it comes to the nation as a whole under Trump’s leadership, Floridians are evenly divided – 48% believe the country is heading in the right direction, while an equal 48% think America is on the wrong track.

This isn’t the only area where the poll showed strong support for policies championed by both Trump and DeSantis.

A clear majority of Florida voters (57%) support extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which are set to expire.

The tax cuts received overwhelming support from Republicans (87%) and even a majority of independent voters (55%), showing the enduring popularity of Trump’s signature economic policy.

At the state level, 53% of Floridians support the elimination of Florida’s Business Rent Tax, a priority for the DeSantis administration.

“With all Florida has done right, opportunities remain at the state level to make our tax environment even more competitive,” Mark Wilson, President & CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, said.

The poll also found continued Republican dominance in the Sunshine State’s political landscape.

When asked which party voters are likely to support in 2026, 50% of Floridians indicated their vote would be for a Republican candidate compared to 40% who would support a Democrat candidate.

This 10-point advantage mirrors the margins by which both Trump and DeSantis won their most recent elections in Florida.

Republicans have also continued to expand their voter registration advantage over Democrats, now holding a staggering lead of more than 1.2 million voters statewide.

The poll surveyed 605 likely voters between May 2-10, 2025, and has a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.

While the presidential race is years away, these numbers will undoubtedly fuel speculation about DeSantis’s political future.

The Florida Governor, who cannot run for a third consecutive term, has remained tight-lipped about his plans after leaving the governor’s mansion.

With Trump constitutionally limited to one more term, the stage could be set for another DeSantis presidential run in 2028 – this time without having to challenge an incumbent Republican President.

For now, both men remain the two most powerful Republicans in America, but this poll shows that in Florida at least, it’s DeSantis who might have the slight edge.
