The leadership shown by Ron DeSantis is a winning path forward for the GOP.
He’s shown he is willing to fight everyone from woke corporations to union bosses.
And Ron DeSantis took on and beat the Florida teachers union bosses and now they are spitting mad.
Republican strategists around the country need only look to Florida for the winning formula for 2024.
DeSantis accused of “punishing” union bosses
Florida Governor, and likely 2024 GOP Presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has clearly shown how to fight, and win.
And GOP operatives and elected officials should look to his brand of feisty conservatism if they want to win in 2024.
In politics, you are known as much by the enemies you make as by the friends you keep.
And Ron DeSantis is making all the right enemies.
He took on Disney after they went full woke.
And he took on the monolith that is the teachers union bosses.
Now Florida’s largest teachers union has sued the popular Republican Governor over a bill he signed into law requiring teachers who want to pay union dues to mail in checks every month.
The union bosses are accusing DeSantis of punishing “disfavored unions.”
And well, they might have a point, a very good and wonderful point.
The law requires union dues payers in certain unions to mail in their checks each month instead of the union officials simply taking the money automatically.
According to the union bosses over at the teachers unions, this requirement is “draconian.”
Forcing union bosses to do their jobs
But the main problem the teachers union bosses have with the new law is that it applies to some Big Labor groups but not those representing firefighter and police officers.
If that is their only problem with the new law, maybe it should apply to all union bosses.
Under the new law, teachers union dues would no longer be automatically deducted from their paychecks.
The law was opposed by Florida Democrats as “union busting” and Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association, said it amounted to “political retribution.”
The reasonable new law imposes additional responsibilities on union officials – oh, the horror!
In addition to requiring union dues payers to mail in their dues each month, it mandates new reporting to the state on the number of employees eligible for membership and how many of them enroll.
Those unions with less than 60% membership would have to reapply for certification.
In other words, union bosses are being forced to do their jobs, since they won’t do them on their own.
A big win for DeSantis
Currently, roughly 60% of Florida teachers are paying union dues, according to a Florida Senate analysis.
Florida Senate Democrat Leader Lauren Book complained the changes will make it harder for unions to exist and pile red tape onto teachers.
“We can trust teachers to make their own personal choices in how they spend their hard-earned money, and attempting to silence the groups that advocate for better pay and better working conditions is unconstitutional and undemocratic,” she said.
Unfortunately, this is all too often the view of union bosses and their Democrat lackeys.
They want to force employees to pay union dues through automatic deductions so they can simply grab the money and spend it to elect their Democrat allies.
That’s why this bill represented a huge win for DeSantis, who has battled teachers union bosses since the COVID pandemic.
