Ron DeSantis is leading the fight to stop left-wing indoctrination of kids in government schools.
Part of that battle includes taking on powerful teachers unions.
And teachers union bosses are infuriated over the pro-freedom education agenda Ron DeSantis just proposed.
On Monday, Ron DeSantis spoke to attendees at “The Freedom Blueprint: DeSantis Education Agenda School Board Retreat.”
DeSantis called on the Republican-controlled legislature to pass “paycheck protection” legislation that will prevent the government from deducting union dues from teacher paychecks.
Instead of automatically deducting the dues, under “paycheck protection” the teachers would need to write checks to the unions.
“First of all, you totally, you do not have to join the teachers union,” DeSantis said. “But if you do, the government, we don’t want to play a role in deducting anybody’s money, so you write every month for the dues and you do it that way.”
“That maximizes freedom to choose,” he continued, before adding “and I think it’ll be a more accurate reflection of who wants to be a part of this or not.”
DeSantis ripped the teachers union bosses for prioritizing “political, partisan, and financial interests” ahead of parental rights and academic achievement.
“They get their money from being able to be involved in these systems,” he told the board members. “You’re doing it because you think it’s good for your community or your kids or your grandkids or whatnot, but they’re doing it because they have personal interests at stake.”
DeSantis said paycheck protection laws would guarantee “a more accurate reflection of who is interested in this [teachers union] or not.”
He also indicated setting a threshold for unions to represent teachers, which would involve at least 50 percent of teachers being members of the unions.
“If they don’t have a majority of the teachers who are actually signing up to pay dues, it should be decertified,” DeSantis said. “You shouldn’t be able to continue as a zombie organization that doesn’t have the support of the people you are negotiating for.”
The Governor also promised “the greatest increase” in teacher salary the state has ever seen.
“And we’re going to do all those things to make sure we have really good people in the classroom,” DeSantis said.
The Left already hated Ron DeSantis.
Now that he’s threatening to take away the massive power teachers unions wield over education, the Left will go after him like never before.
