One Florida mom crashed into a school bus with her 11-year-old daughter in the passenger seat and then tried to bite the cop who arrested her

Some people shouldn’t be allowed behind the wheel of a shopping cart, let alone a car.

Others shouldn’t be trusted with goldfish, much less children.

And one Florida mom crashed into a school bus with her 11-year-old daughter in the passenger seat and then tried to bite the cop who arrested her.

The Crash That Had Witnesses Calling 911

The nightmare unfolded around 5:04 p.m. on September 5th at the intersection of Citrus Park Boulevard and Lawrence Road in Boynton Beach.

Megan Lee Champion was behind the wheel of her white Lexus with her daughter right beside her when witnesses watched in horror as she repeatedly swerved between lanes.¹

Then Champion made a sharp left turn directly into the path of a southbound Palm Beach County school bus.

The impact deployed both airbags in her Lexus and left damage on the bus – though thankfully the bus driver was uninjured and no students were aboard.

What happened next tells you everything you need to know about Champion’s priorities.

When Boynton Beach police officers arrived on scene, they found Champion still sitting in the driver’s seat with her daughter.

Officer reports paint a disturbing picture of a woman who appeared "drowsy, lethargic" with "glassy eyes" and "extremely constricted pupils."²

Champion looked like "she was going to fall asleep," according to the police report.

The Woman Who Couldn’t Stand Up Straight

Here’s where it gets worse.

When officers asked Champion to exit her vehicle, she "stumbled, unable to maintain her balance and swaying back and forth."³

Her speech was slurred when she denied drinking anything that day.

But officers could smell alcohol on her breath.

Champion couldn’t even tell police her home address when they asked.

She claimed she takes blood pressure medication, but that doesn’t explain the aggressive behavior that followed.

When officers attempted to conduct field sobriety tests, Champion "continued to be agitated, almost ran into traffic, and refused to follow directions."⁴

She was yelling and resisting officers who were trying to guide her to a safe area.

That’s when they decided to arrest her.

She Actually Tried to Bite a Cop

You want to know what kind of person we’re dealing with here?

As Officer Alexis was placing Champion in the patrol vehicle, she tried to bite him.

A 38-year-old woman – with her traumatized daughter watching – attempted to bite a police officer who was doing his job.

At the DUI testing facility, Champion refused both breath and urine tests.

She also refused to sign her citation.

Champion was booked into Palm Beach County Jail on charges of DUI involving property damage, DUI with a minor passenger, and willfully refusing to sign and accept a traffic summons.

She bonded out the next day and has a court appearance scheduled for September 22nd.

The Real Victims Here

Look, here’s what really gets me fired up about this story.

That 11-year-old girl was trapped in the passenger seat while her mother allegedly drove impaired, crashed into a school bus, then fought with police officers.

What kind of trauma does that create for a kid?

The witnesses who called this in described Champion’s Lexus "traveling at a slow speed and swerving several times between two lanes" before the crash.⁵

These weren’t split-second decisions – this was a pattern of dangerous driving that multiple people noticed.

The school bus driver could have been seriously injured or killed.

Other drivers on the road were put at risk by Champion’s alleged reckless behavior.

When Parents Become the Danger

What happens when the danger is coming from inside the house, or when the person who’s supposed to protect a child is the one putting her in harm’s way?

Champion had her daughter in the front passenger seat – not even in the back where she’d be safer in a crash.

She allegedly drove impaired with her child in the car.

She crashed into a school bus.

Then she fought with the officers who responded to help.

At what point do we say enough is enough with parents who endanger their own children?

The System That Keeps Failing Kids

Champion bonded out the next day.

She’s back on the streets while her daughter deals with the trauma of what happened.

Florida has some of the toughest DUI laws in the country, but they don’t seem to be deterring people like Champion who put children at risk.

DUI with a minor in the vehicle should carry mandatory jail time – not a quick trip to the bonding company.

When you endanger a child through alleged impaired driving, you’ve crossed a line that shouldn’t have a get-out-of-jail-free card.

The witnesses who called this in did their civic duty.

The police officers who responded handled a difficult situation professionally despite Champion’s aggressive behavior.

But the system that lets someone bond out after allegedly driving drunk with an 11-year-old? That’s the system that’s failing these kids.

Champion’s case is scheduled for September 22nd.

Let’s hope the judge throws the book at her.

That little girl deserves better than a mother who allegedly drives impaired and fights with cops.

And the rest of us deserve better than sharing the roads with people who think their right to allegedly drive drunk trumps everyone else’s right to safety.
