Angie Nixon lost a vote 83–28 and decided someone else should pay for it.
That someone is Representative Yvette Benarroch – who is now waiting to find out if the hearing damage is permanent.
And Nixon's only public response has been to call it a peaceful protest.
What Nixon Did on the House Floor
On April 29th, as the Florida House moved toward final passage of Gov. DeSantis' redistricting map, Nixon grabbed a hot-pink bullhorn and marched through the chamber aisles.
She was already shouting: "This is a violation of the Constitution! I will not allow you to destroy our democracy!"
At some point, she put the bullhorn right next to Rep. Benarroch's ear.
"When she put the bullhorn right there between us, I kind of felt something on my right ear," Benarroch told Florida's Voice. "I was going back to my office, and I got a little dizzy, and I felt like my ear was kind of weird."
By that evening she was in the emergency room at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare.

Doctors found a nerve in her ear had been damaged by the noise.
She is now scheduled to see an ENT specialist to determine whether the damage is permanent.
Medical experts describe this kind of sudden injury as acoustic trauma – a single loud event that can permanently destroy the delicate hair cells of the inner ear in an instant.
The symptoms that follow: dizziness, a blocked sensation, persistent headaches, ringing that won't stop.
Benarroch is experiencing all of them.
Nixon Knew Exactly What She Was Doing
This wasn't an accident.
Nixon didn't stumble into a colleague while distracted.
She marched through the chamber – bullhorn in hand – deliberately creating as much chaos as possible, and she was so disruptive that two of her own Democrat colleagues accidentally voted yes on the bill, with one later blaming "the commotion with the bullhorn" for the mix-up.

Nixon admitted out loud she was breaking House rules even while doing it: "I'm out of order, but what y'all are doing is illegal!"
She chose to do it anyway.
And when the dust settled and Benarroch ended up in the emergency room, Nixon took to Facebook to brag about her "peaceful protest" and tell followers: "Let's get loud. It's time to shake things up a bit."

Nixon called it shaking things up.
This Is What the Modern Democrat Party Looks Like
DeSantis was asked about Nixon's stunt on Fox & Friends and didn't mince words.
"That clip is really, unfortunately emblematic of the modern-day Democrat Party," he said. "To just scream and yell and try and disrupt the proceedings just 'cause you don't get your way."

He's right – and this isn't the first time Democrats have reached for the bullhorn when they ran out of votes.
In 2023, Tennessee Democrats Justin Jones, Justin Pearson, and Gloria Johnson stormed their House floor with a bullhorn to protest the legislature's lack of action on gun legislation they couldn't stop through legitimate means.
The pattern is the same every time: lose the vote, grab the bullhorn, disrupt the proceedings, then call yourself a hero for democracy.
Nixon has been running this same play since 2022, when she staged a sit-in on the Florida House floor during a previous redistricting battle.
Now she's running for U.S. Senate on the strength of stunts like this.
Think about that.
A woman who puts a bullhorn next to a colleague's ear – and responds to the resulting injury by calling it a peaceful protest – wants to be a United States Senator.
The Part Democrats Hope You Won't Notice
Benarroch filed a workers' compensation claim and notified the Speaker of the House.
She characterized Nixon's behavior the only way it can honestly be described: "reckless and ignorant."
"It's not acceptable ever, regardless where we stand, which party," Benarroch said. "As elected officials, we are held to a higher standard."

She is still evaluating her legal options.
Meanwhile, the map passed.
The Florida Senate followed the House, sending the race-neutral redistricting plan to DeSantis for his signature – a plan expected to deliver Republicans up to four additional House seats heading into the 2026 midterms.
Angie Nixon screamed herself hoarse, sent a colleague to the emergency room, and lost anyway.
