Gavin Newsom Has Spent 18 Years and $126 Billion on a Train That Does Not Exist

Oct 2, 2026

Gavin Newsom promised California voters a high-speed train for $33 billion.

Eighteen years later, not one mile of track is running – and the price tag just hit $126 billion with no end in sight.

While Gavin Newsom plays make-believe with infrastructure, Ron DeSantis just finished building it.

A Road That Actually Gets Built

Florida's Turnpike has been hauling freight and families since 1957.

It now handles more than 3 million customers a day and over 1 billion vehicles every year.

DeSantis just committed $20 billion to widen the 320-mile mainline from Florida City to Wildwood to at least six lanes the entire length of the corridor.

The project is already 55% complete.

He's added 179 lane miles along the mainline and 384 lane miles across the full Florida Turnpike System.

On top of the widening, DeSantis announced $8.5 million to upgrade 19 restaurants and retail locations across six major service plazas – bringing in Zaxby's, Jimmy John's, and refreshed Villa Pizza and Starbucks locations.

Sixteen of those open before the end of 2026.

A $54 million expansion adds 150 new commercial truck parking spots at the Turkey Lake Service Plaza, doubling capacity there.

“As Florida has grown, we have made major investments in our transportation infrastructure to reduce congestion and improve our roadways,” Governor Ron DeSantis said. “We’ve made significant investments in expanding lane capacity to relieve congestion all along the Turnpike. Today, I announced an additional investment to improve 19 restaurants and retail locations across six Turnpike service plazas. We will keep working to ensure that our roadways are safer, more convenient, and better-maintained than ever before.”

The Contrast Liberals Don't Want You to See

California collects the highest gas taxes in the country.

In return, its roads rank second worst in the nation – ahead of only Alaska.

The average California driver loses roughly $843 a year in vehicle damage from potholes and deteriorating pavement.

Newsom's answer to all of it was a train that started at $33 billion, is now at $126 billion, and that California's own state inspector general says will run out of money by 2027.

Zero miles operational. No completion date before 2033 at the earliest.

DeSantis, meanwhile, retired 54% of Florida's historic taxpayer-supported state debt while the roads went in.

He cut $10 billion in taxes over his tenure and still carries $16.75 billion in reserves – money in the bank, not borrowed from your grandchildren.

He vetoed $10.6 billion in wasteful spending over eight years while simultaneously launching the biggest infrastructure investment in Florida Turnpike history.

That's not luck.

That's what happens when a governor treats taxpayer money like it belongs to the people who earned it.

“Transportation plays a direct role in the quality of life of Floridians, connecting people to jobs, opportunities, and the communities they call home,” FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. said. “The Turnpike System is a vital part of this, which is why we’ve made significant investments to continue expanding the Mainline.”

What Real Infrastructure Looks Like

Florida is the fastest-growing state in the country – adding close to 900 new residents every single day.

Those people need roads that work.

Supply chains need truck stops that exist.

Families driving down to visit grandkids in Orlando need a place to pull over, eat a real meal, and get back on the road.

DeSantis delivered all of it – without bankrupting the state, without 18 years of excuses, and without a price tag that quadrupled before a single lane opened.

California's train to nowhere has been called the worst public infrastructure failure in American history – and Newsom is still at the podium defending it.

DeSantis stopped talking years ago.

The roads are already there.
