A Florida Man Groomed a 14-Year-Old Online for Two Years and Then Hid Her in a Dryer When Deputies Showed Up

Jun 26, 2026

Florida just reminded every parent in America why their kid's phone is a hunting ground.

Christopher Veit spent two years building access to a child – and deputies found her stuffed inside a clothes dryer when they finally showed up.

When she finally called 911, she had already been his secret for two years.

He Planned the Dryer Before He Needed It

Monroe County deputies responded to Veit's Key Largo home on Miramar Drive around 11:45 a.m. Sunday after the 16-year-old victim called 911 and reported she was being held hostage.

When they arrived, Veit initially denied she was there.

Then they opened the dryer.

The arrest report reveals something worse than the dryer itself: Veit had told the girl in advance that this was exactly where she would go if police ever showed up at the door.

He had a plan.

She told deputies he confronted her the moment patrol vehicles arrived, asked if she had called police, then ordered her to get inside.

She complied because she was afraid of him.

Veit restrained her, confiscated her phone, and closed the door.

When deputies found her and asked Veit why he denied her presence, he looked at the ground and said nothing.

He is now facing kidnapping, false imprisonment, interference with child custody, and four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

No bond has been set.

The Online Playbook That Predators Use Every Single Day

This did not start with a dryer.

It started with a dating website, a 14-year-old girl, and a 53-year-old man who knew exactly what he was doing.

According to the arrest report, Veit met the victim online when she was 14 – roughly two years before Sunday's arrest.

Her mother told deputies she had no idea her daughter was in Monroe County and had no knowledge she was spending time with Veit at all.

That is how grooming works.

The predator builds the relationship in secret, normalizes contact over months and years, and isolates the child from everyone who might intervene.

Investigators executing a search warrant found her iPhone, bed sheets, and two bags of her belongings on a chair in the home – evidence she had been there regularly, not just on Sunday.

Detectives also found several sheets of counterfeit currency and notified the U.S. Secret Service.

Florida Is Fighting Back While Predators Keep Hunting

Florida law enforcement has been among the most aggressive in the country on child predator operations.

A year ago, Operation Dragon Eye – led by the U.S. Marshals Service and backed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier – recovered 60 critically missing children across Tampa Bay.

Eight people were arrested.

Several of the recovered girls were pregnant.

One was carrying the child of her trafficker.

"If you victimize children, you're going to prison, end of story," Uthmeier said.

That girl in Key Largo saved herself because no one else knew she needed saving – and that tells you exactly what parents are up against when the only barrier between their child and a predator is a screen and an app.

The victim was transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where she consented to a sexual assault examination, and was released to a family member's care.

The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified.

Veit's arraignment is scheduled for August 4.
