Now Byron Donalds just told every Florida voter he intends to keep it alive.
And Byron Donalds just revealed his plans for Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo if elected governor.
The Man Who Took On the Medical Establishment
While governors across America were shutting churches and mandating shots, Ladapo was doing something different.
DeSantis hired him in 2021 after noticing his op-eds challenging the COVID lockdown consensus.
Ladapo came with serious credentials – Harvard medical degree, Harvard doctorate in health policy, UCLA faculty appointment.
He didn't use those credentials to parrot government talking points.
He signed the Great Barrington Declaration, which argued that health authorities should protect the vulnerable instead of destroying entire economies through blanket lockdowns.
He challenged the mRNA vaccine narrative when every institution in America was demanding compliance.
In 2024, his Department of Health issued guidance warning that the federal government had failed to provide sufficient safety data for COVID boosters – covering risks including cardiovascular problems and autoimmune disease.
The medical establishment called him dangerous.
Florida watched him hold the line anyway.
What Donalds Is Promising to Keep
Donalds didn't just say Ladapo could stay.
He said Ladapo's "courage and willingness to defend medical freedom have been unmatched" – and that's a policy commitment, not a campaign pleasantry.
Donalds himself said neither he nor his family took the COVID vaccine – a personal alignment with the medical freedom philosophy Ladapo has championed from day one.
The agenda they're aligned on goes far beyond COVID.
Just last September, Ladapo and DeSantis announced Florida would work to eliminate all childhood vaccine mandates in the state – every single one.

Ladapo called mandatory vaccination an intrusion on personal rights bordering on "slavery," and said the government has no right to dictate what goes into your body.
Florida simultaneously launched a state-level Make America Healthy Again commission, modeled on RFK Jr.'s federal initiative.
Donalds signaled he sees a path to moving beyond mandatory MMR and polio vaccinations for schoolchildren – placing responsibility for measles' recent resurgence on illegal immigration rather than vaccine hesitancy.
That's a direct challenge to the public health establishment's preferred narrative.
The DeSantis Contrast That Makes This a Story
It wasn't always this way in Florida.
Ladapo's predecessor, Scott Rivkees, got pulled from a COVID roundtable after suggesting a year of social distancing might be necessary – and later surfaced in a New York Times interview complaining to federal officials, including Deborah Birx, about Florida's approach.
DeSantis replaced that approach with Ladapo, and Florida became the national model for medical freedom.
Donalds retaining Ladapo is a clear signal that transition isn't happening in Tallahassee.
What This Means for the Governor's Race
Donalds is the Trump-endorsed candidate in a Republican primary that includes former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner and DeSantis' own Lt. Governor Jay Collins.

The medical freedom movement has deep roots in Florida's conservative base – and Ladapo is its most visible symbol.
Donalds signaling continuity here doesn't just reassure DeSantis supporters.
It tells every parent who fought a school board over mask mandates, every business owner who lost customers to government shutdowns, and every Floridian who resented being treated like a subject rather than a citizen that the fight isn't over.
They were right.
The government was wrong.
And Byron Donalds is betting his campaign that Florida voters remember exactly which side each person stood on.
