The federal government spent two years telling parents what goes into their children's bodies.
Now Florida's Surgeon General just signed a rule that puts those decisions back where they belong.
And parents were jumping for joy after Florida’s Surgeon General bypassed the State Legislature on vaccine mandates.
Florida Strikes First on Parental Rights
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo signed a proposed rule on August 20 removing four vaccines from the mandatory list for PreK-12 school attendance: Hepatitis B, chickenpox, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and pneumococcal conjugate.
That's not all.
The rule also expands exemptions beyond religious beliefs to include moral and ethical convictions.
Parents and college students will also be allowed to opt their records out of the state vaccine database entirely.

This is what medical freedom actually looks like in practice – not just a campaign slogan.
The key detail the media is glossing over: those four vaccine requirements exist only as agency rules, not state law – which means Ladapo doesn't need a single vote from the Legislature to make this happen.
A 21-day public comment period opened after the August 20 signing, and final approval would lock the changes in.
The Political Class Refused to Act – So Ladapo Did
Here's what the media won't tell you: Florida has been fighting for this for almost a year.
Back in September 2025, Governor DeSantis and Ladapo stood in front of a crowd in Valrico and called for eliminating every last vaccine mandate in the state.
Ladapo said it plainly: "Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body? I don't have that right. Your body is a gift from God."
That's the kind of language the medical establishment hates – and the reason they've been working overtime to stop him.
Establishment doctors immediately pushed back, citing the usual talking points about disease spread and herd immunity.
The Florida Legislature, despite being Republican-controlled, stalled on the broader Medical Freedom bill – which died in the House without a vote.
A separate effort, SB 1756, was even more modest – it didn't remove a single mandate, just added a personal conscience exemption – and it still couldn't clear the House.

So Ladapo went around all of them.
Florida isn't the only front in this fight.
RFK Jr. at HHS overhauled the childhood vaccine schedule in January 2026, cutting recommended vaccines from 17 down to 11 – before a Massachusetts federal judge temporarily blocked those changes in March.
The medical lobby is fighting everywhere it can.

When DeSantis leads, governors follow – that's been the playbook on education, immigration, and government overreach for five years running.
The establishment's argument has always been that removing mandates creates public health chaos.
But Florida's vaccination rates had already been declining for years before this rule – dropping from 93.5% of kindergartners in 2020 to 88.7% in 2025 – without the catastrophic outbreaks the sky-is-falling crowd predicted.
What Ladapo's rule actually does is give Florida parents the same flexibility that 17 other states already extend through personal conscience exemptions – and then goes further by eliminating the bureaucratic mandate entirely.

Both leading Republicans in Florida's 2026 governor's race – Congressman Byron Donalds and former House Speaker Paul Renner – have backed the move.
Trump endorsed Donalds in February.
The parental rights coalition that just won a decade of school choice battles is about to add medical freedom to its winning record.
Democrats can scream about public health all they want.
Florida just showed them what happens when parents actually run the show.
