Byron Donalds Just Told Republicans Something They Need to Hear After Losing Congress

Nov 6, 2026

When Senate Republican leader John Barrasso was asked about the high price of diesel destroying his voters' wallets, he said "we'll talk about that later."

They never did – and now Democrats control Congress.

But Byron Donalds just won Florida and told Fox & Friends exactly what that silence cost the Republican Party.

The Senate Let Trump's Agenda Die

Donalds didn't hold back.

Diesel at $6.36 a gallon.

Republican voters who drove Trump to a historic 2024 victory were pumping that into their trucks every week – and watching their Republican Senate do nothing about it.

"Gas prices are a major problem," Donalds said. "I think people were looking at the price of gas, the price of diesel, and I think those frustrations boiled over."

He didn't stop there.

The Save America Act – Trump's voter ID bill that passed the House and had the president's full backing – sat in the Senate and rotted.

Trump's border security packages that actually worked – the ones that stopped the invasion Democrats spent years enabling – never got codified into law.

Donalds called the Senate "lazy."

He said "the Senate sucks."

He watched common-sense legislation go over there and languish while Republicans held every lever of power in Washington.

Now they don't.

What Florida Did Right While Washington Failed

Donalds won because he ran a different kind of campaign.

His team knocked on 2.2 million doors.

“We did a lot of work on the ground in this campaign. We knocked over 2.2 million doors in the state of Florida. That’s never happened in our state before,” Donalds said.

He talked about insurance costs, housing costs, and education – the things Floridians actually worried about every day.

The Florida Panhandle delivered again, the way it always does for conservatives who show up and make the case.

That contrast with Washington couldn't be sharper.

While Donalds was fighting for every vote in Southwest Florida, Barrasso was brushing off questions about record diesel prices with a promise to circle back that he never kept.

A Morgan Stanley analysis found that midterm cycles where gasoline prices rose from January through October cost the incumbent party an average of 32 House seats.

Republicans knew this was coming.

They did it anyway.

Donalds pointed out healthcare costs as one issue he heard the mos to the campaign trail.

“We have to address healthcare. Healthcare costs are out of control. It’s not just here in Florida. It’s all over the country,” he said. “The New York Times just came out a couple days ago with an article that said the Obamacare premiums are going to soar 14% again next year. We have to really examine how we’re delivering healthcare, what the payment system looks like, how you drive efficiency to stabilize costs in healthcare.”

The Permission Slip Democrats Needed

This is what losing Congress actually means.

The border wall funding – gone.

Codifying Trump's immigration enforcement – gone.

The Save America Act – dead on arrival in a Democrat-controlled Senate.

Everything Trump built through executive action now faces a hostile legislative branch that can slow it, starve it, and potentially reverse it.

Democrats didn't earn this.

Republicans gave it to them.

Donalds is heading back to Capitol Hill during the lame duck session, and he's already talking about what Republicans have to fix.

The voters who sat home or crossed over weren't abandoning Trump.

They were sending a message to the people who claimed to be Trump's allies and then spent two years proving they weren't.

The question is whether the Senate Republicans who caused this disaster are finally willing to listen.
