Democrat Hypocrisy Was on Full Display When Nikki Fried Demanded This Florida GOP Chair Resign Over Assault Allegations

Oct 18, 2026

Nikki Fried went on camera three years ago and called r**e allegations "severe" and demanded the Republican Party chair resign immediately.

Now a Democrat campaign manager is accusing her of doing exactly what she condemned.

And Democrat hypocrisy was on full display when Nikki Fried demanded this Florida GOP Chair resign over assault allegations.

The Operative Democrats Won't Touch

Barry Edwards has been a Tampa Bay political fixture for thirty years.

He raised and directed more than $2.2 million in political contributions – nearly half flowing to Democrat organizations, candidates, and aligned firms.

He was publicly quoted last year in the Sun Sentinel weighing in on David Jolly's fundraising operation by name.

Jolly is now the Democrat nominee for Florida governor.

Edwards was an adjunct professor at Florida State University in the 1990s, where he was criminally charged with extorting a student.

Florida's Voice independently reviewed court records confirming that charge.

Republicans pushed him out years ago – the Giuliani presidential campaign, the Republican Party of Florida, and the nonpartisan Hillsborough Society all barred him from their events after reviewing the allegations against him.

Florida Democrats kept him at the table.

What the Campaign Manager Found

Shawna Vercher managed state Sen. Brian Nathan's March 2026 special election campaign.

During that campaign, a young volunteer came to her privately and said Edwards had assaulted him.

He told Vercher he would support Nathan – but only if Edwards played no role.

Vercher investigated.

Two more victims came forward with matching accounts: offers of campaign or legislative-staff opportunities, then alcohol or drugs, then isolation at a third location.

Her review of Leon County records and Tallahassee Democrat archives turned up eight verified accusations and 14 additional reports of inappropriate behavior ranging from pressuring individuals to drink to allegations of confinement and sexual assault.

A police file included a letter from the Boy Scouts of America confirming Edwards was removed after taking a 15-year-old Scout off BSA property alone overnight.

The organization investigated, removed him, and reported him to child protective services.

One FSU victim reportedly wore a wire.

The transcript shows Edwards did not deny the accusations.

Vercher estimates roughly two dozen victims so far – allegations spanning from the mid-1990s to months ago.

Every account follows the same script: a job or opportunity offered as bait, a drink pressed into someone's hand, a door closing somewhere private.

Victims are often underage males connected to campaigns, internships, or FSU.

Nathan Heard It All and Called It a Distraction

Vercher said Nathan met with at least one victim personally.

He reviewed accounts from at least three others.

His private reaction, according to Vercher, was this: "I'm going to be sick, I want to punch this guy, you know, this is disgusting, we have to stop this guy, I can't believe my children were around him."

He promised action.

He won the election in March.

Weeks later, one victim texted expecting accountability.

Instead, Nathan attended a Democratic function – and had dinner with Edwards.

"That kind of changed my perspective," Vercher said. "I no longer felt like, okay, I'm being pushed off… I then felt like he was just kind of pushing this under the rug."

Nathan has since said publicly he believes the victims – but described the matter as a "distraction" to his campaign and a "political football."

Vercher called that "inappropriate."

With a single press statement, she said, Nathan could have raised national awareness.

With one letter, he could have launched a formal investigation.

He has done neither.

The Money Trail and What It Means for November

Shortly after Nathan's special election win, Vercher says a liaison claiming to represent the Florida Democrat Party approached him with a different kind of support.

The FDP had initially considered his race unwinnable and tried to block his candidacy.

Once he won, the treatment changed.

"Now they can trot him around as a show pony and raise money," Vercher told Florida's Voice.

The support came with a condition: sideline Vercher and silence any party opposition to Edwards.

Vercher and others tracking contributions found Edwards' donations aligned closely in location and timing with the allegations.

Nathan has accepted $89,000 in support from organizations that received money tied to Edwards.

"This doesn't look accidental to me," Vercher said, "and that's exactly why we need an investigation."

Meanwhile, Nikki Fried – the woman who declared rape allegations "severe" when a Republican was accused – has not responded to the allegations against a man funding her party's operations.

Fried demanded Christian Ziegler resign immediately when his allegations became public in 2023.

She has made no such demand here.

She has issued no statement.

She has not called for an investigation.

Nathan's attorney, Messer Caparello P.A., issued a cease-and-desist notice to Vercher demanding his name be removed from discussions and a victim-tracking site taken down.

The firm did not respond to Florida's Voice's formal request for comment by deadline.

Vercher says she has faced character attacks, money offers to stay quiet, and threats – all for doing what she was told her party stood for.

She resigned from Nathan's reelection campaign in May.

She is now working with online influencers and a citizens' coalition of sexual assault survivors who are reviewing documents, contacting organizations that continue to endorse Nathan, and tracking results publicly.

"We're going to make sure it doesn't go away," she said.

Here is what the Florida Democrat Party needs voters to not notice before November: their governor's nominee is tied to an operative the party has known about for years, their party chair went silent the moment he started writing checks to Democrats, and a sitting state senator who privately called the situation "disgusting" decided a dinner with the accused was more important than a press statement.

Fried built her political brand on holding Republicans accountable for exactly this.

Byron Donalds built his on Florida values.

Voters will decide in November which one held up.
