Nikki Fried Just Told Florida Homeowners to Keep Paying Their Property Taxes

Jul 23, 2026

Florida homeowners have been crushed by property tax bills for three straight years.

Now the Florida Democrat Party just made their position official – they want it to stay that way.

Democrats just voted to formally block the one amendment that would have actually cut your taxes, and what Nikki Fried said to justify it tells you everything about who the left is fighting for.

Democrats Just Picked Government Budgets Over Florida Homeowners

The Florida Democrat Party voted over the weekend to formally oppose Amendment 3 – the ballot measure that would raise the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000 and put Florida on a path to eliminating non-school property taxes entirely.

Nikki Fried, the party chair, released a statement calling the amendment "a scam."

The amendment passed the Florida House 75–26 and the Senate 30–9 after a special legislative session convened specifically to deliver property tax relief.

Fried's argument?

That cutting taxes would "rob their communities of essential services."

That's the same argument Democrats have made against every tax cut since 1978.

The Playbook Has Not Changed in 48 Years

When California voters passed Proposition 13 in 1978 – cutting property taxes by $6 billion – Democrats in Sacramento called it catastrophic.

Every major Democrat leader in California opposed it.

California voters passed it anyway, 65 percent to 35 percent, and it became the most popular ballot measure in state history.

Florida's Amendment 3 carries the same logic Prop 13 did: government grows until voters force it to stop.

Fried knows this. So instead of offering an alternative plan to lower property taxes, the Florida Democrat Party is running the same 48-year-old playbook – warning about fire departments, libraries, and children's services, hoping voters flinch.

What This Vote Actually Reveals

Here is what Nikki Fried did not explain in her statement.

Amendment 3 requires 60 percent of Florida voters to ratify it in November – and there is currently no organized support campaign for it.

Governor DeSantis says he will vote for it but will not actively campaign for it.

The Florida Fire Chiefs' Association announced last week they "cannot support the amendment in its current form" – adding institutional momentum to the opposition.

That leaves Florida homeowners – the people who actually pay the bill – with no one in their corner while every government institution in the state lines up to protect its own budget.

State economists estimated Amendment 3 would reduce local government property tax revenues by $5 billion in its first year and $11.8 billion per year after five years.

Democrats are framing that as a crisis.

Every dollar of that $11.8 billion is a dollar currently being extracted from Florida homeowners who have seen their property tax bills climb year after year while the state raked in record revenues.

The Party That Claims to Speak for Working People Just Voted to Keep Your Tax Bill High

Nikki Fried called a tax cut for working Florida homeowners a scam – while her party holds zero statewide offices and hasn't won a statewide race since 2018.

That is who is lecturing you about affordability.

California voters heard the same warnings in 1978 and passed Prop 13 anyway.

Floridians should vote yes on Amendment 3 in November and make Nikki Fried explain to her donors why the same playbook that failed in 1978 failed again.
