The Feud That Made This Moment Mean Everything
On election night 2022, Byron Donalds stood on that Tampa stage and introduced Ron DeSantis before his landslide victory speech.
Five months later, Donalds chose Trump over DeSantis for president.
DeSantis wouldn't take his calls.
When Donalds announced his gubernatorial run with Trump's full backing, DeSantis made sure everyone knew exactly what he thought.
"A guy like Byron, he just hasn't been a part of any of the victories that we've had here over the Left over these last years," DeSantis said publicly.

He held back his endorsement through the entire primary season.
He refused to commit to campaigning with Donalds.
As recently as last week, he still wouldn't say whether he'd actively support the Republican nominee.
Then he stood at the Florida GOP Leadership Forum and said it out loud.
"I'm endorsing the slate here tonight… because I know it's important for the state of Florida," he said.
What the Endorsement Actually Does
Donalds won the August 18 primary by a landslide – nearly 49% of the Republican vote in a ten-man field.
Trump's endorsement was the engine.
But DeSantis' blessing is something different.
For eight years, DeSantis built a machine.
He appointed James Uthmeier as attorney general.
He appointed Blaise Ingoglia as CFO.
He endorsed Wilton Simpson for agriculture commissioner.

These were his people, his picks, his legacy.
Tuesday night, all four of them stood on that stage together.
DeSantis endorsed the entire slate.
That's not just a blessing for Donalds.
That's DeSantis telling every Republican in Florida that the machine runs through Donalds now.
The Race That Actually Matters
Donalds faces Democrat David Jolly in November.
Jolly – a man who ran as a Republican congressman, then left the party because he couldn't stomach Trump, then jumped to the Democrat Party to run for governor – is the living definition of a political weather vane.
Florida hasn't elected a Democrat governor since 1994.
Republicans have not just held the mansion – they've expanded their dominance.
DeSantis won re-election in 2022 by more than 20 points.
Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, all Cabinet offices, and a 1.2 million voter registration advantage.
Donalds outraised Jolly by 10-to-1 in the most recent fundraising period.
Billionaires are writing six-figure checks.
The Club for Growth put in nearly $1 million.
Jolly is calling for gun control, more education spending, and keeping the government "out of family decisions."
The last Democrat who ran on that playbook in Florida got crushed.

DeSantis governed like a conservative actually means it, and Florida rewarded him with the biggest margins the state has seen in modern political history.
Donalds told supporters after his primary win that he will "build on his success and defend the Florida Dream."
With Trump in the White House and DeSantis now fully behind him, the path is clear.
The Democrats sent a former Republican who hates Trump.
Florida Republicans answered with the man Trump himself chose.
November is going to be a long night for David Jolly.
