Donald Trump handed the keys to a man DeSantis publicly called a bystander.
Now DeSantis is telling his staff "no senioritis" – from a podium nobody in Tallahassee is listening to anymore.
The Governor Who Made Florida Unwinnable for Democrats
When DeSantis won the governorship in 2018, he squeaked through by 32,000 votes out of 8.1 million cast.
Democrats had 280,000 more registered voters than Republicans in Florida when he took office.
Six years later, Republicans hold a 1.5 million voter registration edge.
Republicans control all statewide offices, supermajorities in both chambers of the legislature, and the congressional delegation.
Trump won Florida all three times he ran.

COVID defiance. Parental rights in education.
Anti-woke corporate crackdowns. Gender ideology battles.
Every fight that made national conservatives stand up and applaud, DeSantis picked first in Florida.
"No one's worked harder to get Florida where we are politically than I have," DeSantis said Wednesday. He's not wrong.
How Trump Thanked Him
In February 2025, before Byron Donalds even officially announced his candidacy, Trump posted on social media: "Byron Donalds would be a TRULY GREAT and POWERFUL Governor for Florida and, should he run, will have my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, BYRON, RUN!"
Donalds had backed Trump over DeSantis in the 2024 Republican primary.
That's the loyalty Trump rewards.
DeSantis was shut out of his own succession.
He couldn't endorse his lieutenant governor Jay Collins – that would mean crossing Trump.
He couldn't endorse Donalds – that would mean handing his legacy to the man he'd criticized.
He endorsed no one.
Instead, he told reporters he thought former state House Speaker Paul Renner would be "a really good" governor.
That's not an endorsement.
That's a man with nowhere to go.
What DeSantis Actually Said About Donalds
In early 2025, when Donalds was preparing to jump in, DeSantis didn't bite his tongue.
He said Donalds "just hasn't been a part of any of the victories that we've had here over the left over these last few years."
That's a direct shot.
DeSantis built something.
Donalds gets to inherit it.
After Tuesday's primary, DeSantis issued a statement saying he'd support Donalds and other Republican nominees in November.
Gracious. Necessary. Cold.
The two men will share a stage before January.
They won't be friends.
The Lame Duck Problem No One Will Say Out Loud
Power in politics doesn't transfer at the inauguration.
It transfers the moment everyone knows who the next power center will be.

DeSantis has had a hostile relationship with state House Republicans for two years – they've blocked his legislative initiatives and signaled repeatedly that they're playing for the next governor, not this one.
"No senioritis here," DeSantis told his staff and agency heads.
But you can issue all the memos you want.
The town is already holding auditions for the next show.
What Byron Donalds Actually Runs On
Donalds won the primary with roughly 49% of the vote in a crowded field, running on immigration enforcement, affordability, deregulation, and lower taxes – the Trump agenda transplanted to Tallahassee.
His general election opponent is David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who abandoned the party, won the Democrat primary, and now tries to flip a state where Republicans outnumber Democrats by 1.5 million registered voters.
Early polls show the race closer than Florida's structural advantage would suggest, with Republican headwinds from the Iran war and economic anxiety cutting into normal margins.
Donalds leads by seven points in the most recent polling.
DeSantis won reelection in 2022 by 19 points.
The man who built that margin is now a lame duck.
The man who inherited it needs to prove he can hold it.
The Real DeSantis Legacy
Here's what DeSantis accomplished that nobody can take away: he turned the state that decided three consecutive presidential elections into a safe Republican base.
Florida no longer decides anything at the national level – Republicans bank it and move resources elsewhere.

That is a structural gift to the party that will outlast every culture war battle he ever fought.
Donalds will run Florida now.
Trump will use it as a base of operations.
DeSantis will be a private citizen in January.
He promised "no senioritis."
He's going to keep working till the lights go out.
And then he'll hand over something extraordinary to a man he thinks didn't earn it.
That's politics.
And DeSantis knows it better than anyone.
