Bryan Avila's parents walked into the Freedom Tower as refugees fleeing Castro's Cuba.
On Tuesday, their son walked into the Freedom Tower for a different reason.
And Byron Donalds chose that moment and that building to announce something Democrats have no answer for.
A Ticket Built at the Altar of Anti-Communism
The Freedom Tower in Miami is not an accidental backdrop.
From 1962 to 1974, that building processed hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees escaping Fidel Castro's socialist nightmare.
Avila's parents were among them.
Standing at that podium Tuesday, Avila made it personal in a way no Democrat could manufacture.
"My parents escaped communist Cuba, leaving their home and business behind because they understood the consequences of government control," Avila said.
He didn't read that from a pollster's script.
He lived it.
The American Conservative Union named Avila the most conservative member of the Florida Legislature in 2024 – and that was before he sponsored the Stop W.O.K.E. Act and the property tax amendment that would raise Florida homeowners' homestead exemption to $150,000 next year and $250,000 the year after.
DeSantis offered kind words after the announcement.
“Senator Avila is a good dude. I’ve always appreciated his service in the National Guard,” DeSantis posted on X.

Donalds raised nearly $100 million and won the Republican primary on August 18 with Trump's full endorsement behind him.
Now he's added a running mate with military medals, twelve years in the Florida Legislature, and a family story that makes every Democrat "equity" speech sound exactly like what it is – performance from people who've never seen the real thing disappear.
What Democrats Are Running Against
Avila walked away from a Senate seat with two years still left on his term to join this ticket.
That's not ambition.
That's conviction.
He chaired Florida's Finance and Tax Committee – the panel that controls every dollar of state tax policy – and sponsored legislation that became the Stop W.O.K.E. Act.
He was activated in the National Guard for more than a year during COVID relief operations and deployed after Hurricanes Dorian and Ian.
He beat his last Democrat opponent by 40 points.

The man Donalds is running against – David Jolly – spent years as a Republican, switched parties when it was politically convenient, and now wants Florida voters to hand him the governor's mansion.
Jolly picked former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham as his running mate.
Graham's father, Bob Graham, was a Florida governor and senator who spent decades building the Democrat Party establishment that Floridians have been dismantling election by election since Ron DeSantis flipped Miami-Dade County red.
The contrast writes itself.
The Ticket Democrats Cannot Counter
Democrats spent fifty years promising to make history in Florida.
Byron Donalds – a Republican with Trump's endorsement – is about to do it as the state's first Black governor.
Bryan Avila is the son of Cuban exiles who fled socialism with nothing and built their lives in the freest state in America.
They announced this partnership at the literal monument to freedom from communism.
Democrats have been trying to win Florida back for years – pouring money into Miami-Dade, chasing Cuban-American voters who fled the exact ideology the modern Democrat Party keeps inching toward.

DeSantis won Miami-Dade County in 2022 – the first Republican governor to do it in nearly 20 years.
And the Cuban-American community that delivered that win is now looking at a ticket where one man's parents escaped Castro and the other is about to make Florida history no Democrat ever did.
They've seen socialism up close.
They left it behind.
And now their son is running to make sure Florida never goes back.
