Silicon Valley spent years quietly slipping its tools into your children's classrooms.
Today, Florida slammed the door.
And Ron DeSantis just did what no GOP governor has done – he handed parents the key.
Parents Say Yes or No – and That Changes Everything
Starting July 2027, no Florida school can put an AI tool in front of your child without your written permission first.
Not an opt-out. An opt-in.
That distinction is everything. Every other state that has moved on AI in schools defaults to opt-out – meaning the government does it to your kid, and you have to notice the fine print and fill out the paperwork to make them stop.
State Senator Erin Grall was the only senator to vote against Florida's earlier AI bill, because it only had opt-out language. She was right.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds put it plainly at a campaign event Monday in Miami.
"An opt-out just means the government is going to do it with your child," Donalds said. "And half the time, parents are just busy and just haven't heard about it."
"The opt-in is a parent making an affirmative decision to say, 'Yes, in the classroom, my child is allowed to use AI.' I think that's totally appropriate," he added.
What Big Tech Is No Longer Allowed to Do to Your Grandkids
The Florida Board of Education unanimously approved this policy Wednesday.
No AI company can harvest your grandchild's behavioral data, learning patterns, or emotional responses to train their commercial models.
Any AI tool that shows "unexpected, autonomous behavior" – meaning it starts doing things nobody programmed it to do – gets reported to the state immediately.
AI that operates independently and makes its own decisions is only allowed under direct adult supervision, with a complete activity log, and with a kill switch the school controls – not the vendor.
Schools must name every AI tool being used.
Not a category.
The actual tool, the actual class, how long students are using it.
Kids in fifth grade and younger get an extra layer of review.

Teachers cannot be replaced.
The rule requires AI to support instruction, not override a teacher's judgment.
Any AI tool deployed in Florida classrooms must be "accurate, transparent, viewpoint neutral."
Your grandkids aren't going to get ideologically steered by a chatbot on the state's dime.
DeSantis vs. Silicon Valley – and He's Winning
Ron DeSantis fought for this for months while Florida's Republican-controlled legislature kept deferring to the White House.
Trump's position is clear: no guardrails on AI, anywhere, because we can't fall behind China.
DeSantis said it publicly – opposing AI regulation is a losing position for Republicans – and then he went around a legislature that wouldn't move and got it done through the state Board of Education.
"Florida will not outsource childhood to a chatbot," DeSantis said Wednesday. "We welcome tools that help teachers teach and students learn. We will not accept tools that hide from parents, harvest student data, grade kids in secret, or pretend to be a friend. In this state, a teacher stands in front of the class, a parent has the last word, and a student still has to think."
State Education Commissioner Henry Mack put the contrast plainly.
"We can't dig our head in the sand like the mayor of New York, nor do we want to trust the elitists in Silicon Valley to lead us in the adoption and implementation of AI," Mack said.
The mayor of New York. That's Zohran Mamdani – the democratic socialist who now runs the country's largest school system.
Two weeks ago, Mamdani banned AI for 600,000 students below high school.
No parental input.
No opt-in, no opt-out, no permission slip.
The government simply decided for every family in New York City that their kids wouldn't use this technology.

Florida said: parents decide.
New York said: we decide.

The Pattern Is Clear
Thirty-one states introduced AI-in-education legislation this year. 134 bills.
Most of it is weak.
Voluntary guidance. Opt-out language.
District policies with no enforcement teeth.
Silicon Valley has been in your grandchildren's classrooms for years, collecting data on how they learn, what frustrates them, how long they focus, what emotional cues they display – and feeding all of it into commercial AI models worth billions of dollars.
Nobody asked you.
DeSantis just answered.
He went further than any Republican governor has gone – against his own legislature, against the White House, straight at the industry that spent decades writing its own rules inside your children's schools.
The parents who kept asking why no one was doing anything about this finally have an answer.
