Babysitters have been leaving kids unsupervised for generations – and sometimes it ends in tragedy.
A Florida family just buried their three-year-old daughter after one of those moments went horribly wrong.

What Happened on July 23
Officers responded to the Meadows of Boynton Beach community shortly after 11 a.m. on July 23 after a frantic call – a child was not breathing.
The babysitter had left the home, leaving Briella and her sibling with the babysitter's spouse.
The spouse stayed upstairs while the two children played downstairs – coming down now and then to check on them and bring snacks.
During one of those checks, the spouse found Briella with her head lodged inside a toy kitchen play set.

The spouse immediately freed her and began performing life-saving measures.
“During this time, the spouse remained upstairs as the children played downstairs, periodically checking on the children and giving them snacks,” Boynton Beach Police wrote in a release. “The spouse came down to check on the children and located the 3 year-old with their head stuck in a kitchen play set. The spouse removed the child and immediately began performing life-saving measures until first responders arrived.”
First responders arrived, continued those efforts, and rushed Briella to a nearby hospital.
She never recovered.
Briella died on July 27 – four days after she was found.
Her sibling told investigators what led to it: Briella's toys had tumbled into the play kitchen, and she went in headfirst to get them back.
A Family Without Their Light
Briella's loved ones created a GoFundMe to cover funeral and memorial expenses.

"She had a kind heart, a beautiful spirit, and a smile that could light up any room," the fundraiser reads. "She will forever be loved, forever missed, and forever in our hearts."
That description of a three-year-old stops you cold.
She was three years old.
What Comes Next
Boynton Beach police have not announced any criminal charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
“The toddler's sibling advised that the child’s toys had fallen into the kitchen play set when they attempted to retrieve the toys and became stuck,” the police report read. “At this time, charges have not been filed. The investigation remains ongoing.”
The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet released Briella's official cause and manner of death.
This tragedy is not the first of its kind – and it likely won't be the last.
Just weeks earlier, a Louisiana babysitter was charged with negligent homicide after a three-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool while going unmonitored for roughly 20 minutes, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.

“One of the hardest parts of watching that video is seeing little Ian struggle for his life for several minutes,” Donovan Jackson, public information officer with Ascension Parish, said. “And the second hardest part of watching this is seeing him in that pool about 20 minutes after he had drowned. For over 20 minutes, there was no supervision.”
And in 2025, a Martha's Vineyard babysitter was charged with manslaughter after a two-year-old boy died following three hours alone in a parked car.
Toddlers move fast, get curious, and have no concept of danger.
Every parent who has turned away for a moment and then spun back around in a panic understands that terror – even if, thank God, it never ended the way it did for Briella's family.
