Matt Gaetz gave this surprising answer about running for Florida Governor in 2026

Feb 22, 2024

The job of Governor is highly coveted by Florida Republicans.

The scramble is already underway to replace Ron DeSantis.

And Matt Gaetz gave this surprising answer about running for Florida Governor in 2026.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ time leading the Sunshine State is up after the 2026 Election with term limits kicking in.

He created the “Free State of Florida” and made it the place to be for conservatives.

Under his leadership, Florida has surpassed Texas as the model Republican state and provides the blueprint for conservative policies nationally.

Whoever takes over for DeSantis as Governor will have big shoes to fill.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a top ally of former President Donald Trump in Congress, has been rumored to be eyeing a bid for Florida governor in 2026 after DeSantis is term-limited.

He could have the support of Trump and his family if he decided to throw his hat in the ring.

The former President praised Gaetz when recently asked about the conservative firebrand running for governor.

“Matt Gaetz for Florida governor?” The National Pulse Editor-in-Chief Raheem Kassam asked Trump last fall.

“Well, he’s a great guy,” Trump said. “I mean, he’s great. He’s a wonderful person. He’s strong. He went through Hell for two years over something that I never believed for a second, and he held up very strong. He was very strong.”

Trump was referring to the bogus Justice Department investigation into Gaetz where no charges were filed.

Donald Trump Jr. and his fiancé, former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle, said that they would back Gaetz if he ran for Governor during an interview with him last year.

“Matt Gaetz. What’s the next move?” Trump Jr. said. “I see some ‘Matt Gaetz for President.’”

“No, no, no,” Gaetz replied.

“Matt Gaetz for Governor!” Trump Jr. said.

“I want him to run for Governor,” Guilfoyle said.

“I would definitely enjoy that job so much,” Gaetz said. “I would never leave it if I ever got that opportunity.”

Trump Jr. said that he would “pre endorse” Gaetz for Florida Governor.

The Republican Primary to replace DeSantis is expected to be crowded, but the backing of Trump would give Gaetz an edge against the competition.

Everything was lining up for Gaetz to run for governor in 2026.

But he shocked everyone when he announced on social media that he would not be seeking the job.

“I have no plans to run for Governor,” Gaetz said. “I’ve said for a while – I think I’m exactly where I am supposed to be.”

A lot can change between now and 2026 but it appears that Matt Gaetz will not be running to replace Ron DeSantis.
