It’s been a little over one year since the Florida legislature stripped Disney of its special privileges and self-governing status.
The battle is still raging between DeSantis and the entertainment giant.
But Ron DeSantis just revealed one brutal truth about his battle with Disney that the media will not tell you.
Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Bill cleared the state legislature in March of 2022.
Even though the bill simply prohibited teaching sexually-inappropriate material to children, the Left misnamed it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill and ran a national smear campaign against DeSantis.
Then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek slammed the legislation and tried to strong-arm DeSantis into dropping his support.
Chapek also announced Disney would be donating millions of dollars to LGBT organizations in response to the new Florida law.
Ron DeSantis told Disney executives to stay out of the battle and warned there would be a price to pay for opposing parental rights.
DeSantis made good on his promise and the legislature passed a bill that stripped Disney of its special privileges and self-governing status.
However, after DeSantis signed the bill revoking Disney’s corporate welfare, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which oversaw the area, transferred most of its power to the park before the new board took over.
This meant the incoming Central Florida Tourism Oversight District board had no oversight powers over Disney.
The new board and Disney are currently involved in a fierce legal battle over control of the district.
During a press conference on Monday, Ron DeSantis slammed Disney and promised not to back down from his battle with the entertainment giant.
“I said very clearly they’re going to live under the same laws as everyone else,” DeSantis said. “They’re not going to have their own government.”
DeSantis pointed out how folks criticized the arrangement with Disney for years, but then “flipped just because they wanted to go against me.”
“The reality is there’s a lot of people who always used to criticize this arrangement that Disney had as being corrupt, as being unfair and then the minute I was the one to come in to help unwind it, then they flipped just because they wanted to go against me,” he said. “You’re seeing people shill for a multinational corporation to have special benefits and corporate welfare, as if that is something that is really important.”
DeSantis wrapped up by noting that this is about much more than just Disney.
It’s about corporate welfare run amok in society.
“The issue is more than just one company,” DeSantis said. “I think the issue is about who governs in our society.”
Disney is pulling out all the stops to try and maintain control of their special privileges and self-governing status.
But Ron DeSantis is standing his ground and refusing to bend.
