The national media spent years calling Florida's I-4 the most dangerous highway in America.
Five years of federal crash data just buried that story.
Florida just earned the number one ranking in the country for safe Summer driving – and it's not even close.
The Study That Flipped the Script
Researchers combed through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System – the federal government's crash database – tracking every Memorial Day to Labor Day stretch from 2020 through 2024.
Florida's "Aggressive Summer Driving Score" came in at 9.27 out of 100.
The next closest state – Massachusetts – scored 12.31.
That's a full three points of separation between Florida and every other state in the country.
Florida also registered zero road rage fatal incidents per 100,000 people during Summer months – one of only five states to pull that off.
Summer speeding deaths came in at 0.65 per 100,000 residents – dead last for fatality rate nationally, less than half the 1.53 national average.

David Rosen, Chief Operating Officer of Kuzyk Personal Injury & Car Accident Lawyers – the firm that conducted the analysis – explained why the number is genuinely significant.
"Florida's speeding fatal crash rate of 0.65 per 100,000 is the lowest in the nation, less than half the national average, despite its massive population and status as a top summer travel destination," Rosen said. "This demonstrates that population size alone does not determine per capita risk, and Florida's result sets a benchmark that other large states can aspire to."

Still number one.
One Danger Window Still on the Calendar
Labor Day weekend is a different story – and Floridians heading out right now need to know it.
That same dataset also exposed a sharp spike at Summer's end.
During the Memorial Day stretch, Florida recorded 23 fatal speeding crashes.
By Labor Day, that number climbed to 37 – a 60.9% jump.
That pattern isn't unique to Florida.
Labor Day is the deadliest Summer driving holiday in the country and the second deadliest holiday of any kind – trailing only Thanksgiving.

The National Safety Council estimated 457 traffic deaths across America over Labor Day weekend 2024 alone.
A 10-mile stretch of I-95 north of Jacksonville claimed 21 lives over a single decade of Labor Day weekends, according to federal tracking data.
The two constants every year are speeding and alcohol.
At least 31% of all Labor Day fatal crashes nationwide involve alcohol. Speeding shows up in another 31%.
Friday night after 6 p.m. is the deadliest window of the entire weekend – when the celebrating starts before the driving stops.
DeSantis Made This Happen
Here's what the media won't connect for you.
DeSantis signed HB 351 into law in July 2025 – making dangerous excessive speeding a criminal offense in Florida rather than just a civil fine.
Drive 50 mph or more over the limit, or hit 100 mph in a way that endangers others, and you're looking at an arrest, not a ticket.
Florida Highway Patrol has also run "Operation Southern Slow Down" each Summer since 2024 – a coordinated enforcement campaign across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee targeting speed-related crashes during peak travel months.
The results are right there in the NHTSA data.
No other Southeastern state cracked the top 10 for Summer driving safety.

Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Rhode Island rounded out the top five – all smaller, colder, less-traveled states that still couldn't beat Florida on a per-capita basis although they had every structural advantage to win.
The media built an entire narrative around Florida's roads being uniquely deadly.
The federal government's own crash database just said otherwise.
Floridians heading out this Labor Day weekend should know they live in the safest Summer driving state in America – and that the next 72 hours are the one stretch all year when that ranking is most at risk.
