Washington, DC’s response was to build NASA a headquarters 900 miles away – a building three-quarters empty – and now they want to rebuild it with your money.
Byron Donalds just announced the plan to end that absurdity once and for all.
NASA's Lease Runs Out and Florida Is Ready to Pounce
NASA's Washington headquarters lease expires in 2028, and the agency is already hunting for a new home.
Donalds – the Trump-endorsed frontrunner for Florida governor – dropped his "Florida's Space Race" plan last Thursday, calling for NASA headquarters to be relocated to the Sunshine State's Space Coast.
He's not alone in pushing for this.
Senator Ashley Moody already introduced the CAPE Canaveral Act to make the move official.
Senator Rick Scott signed on as a cosponsor.

The legislation would bring NASA's 2,500 employees to Brevard County – home of Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Ohio lawmakers made a competing pitch for Cleveland.
Texas Republicans pushed for Houston's Johnson Space Center.
Florida has one advantage neither state can match: 109 rocket launches in 2025 – a national record – with the FAA already authorizing SpaceX to ramp up to 120 Falcon 9 launches per year from the Space Coast alone.
The $1.8 Trillion Prize Washington Doesn't Want Florida to Have
While DC suits debated which empty building to move into next, Florida quietly became the most important piece of real estate in the global space economy – 109 launches in 2025, a $1.8 billion SpaceX Starship facility rising at Cape Canaveral, a $140 million Lockheed Martin plant under construction in Titusville, and a 220-project aerospace pipeline valued at $6 billion, all while the global space economy crossed $613 billion and is headed for $1.8 trillion within the next decade.
Donalds's plan would turbocharge all of it.
He wants to designate 10 strategic development sites in Florida for expedited permitting – companies get a "yes" in his first year as governor.

He wants zero-tuition workforce training through a program called LaunchPad – machinists, electricians, and construction crews, not just scientists with graduate degrees.
He wants a Space Race Summit to signal to every aerospace company on earth that Florida is open for business.
Why Elon Musk Signed Off Before Donalds Even Announced It
Elon Musk – whose SpaceX fired more than 100 rockets from Florida's coast in 2025 alone – endorsed Byron Donalds for governor months before this space plan was dropped.
That's not a coincidence.
Musk understands something the bureaucrats in that three-quarters-empty DC building refuse to accept: the center of American space power has already moved to Florida.
The paperwork just hasn't caught up.
Moving NASA into the most active launch corridor on Earth isn't a political gesture – it's a rational business decision.
NASA's engineers would be 40 miles from the rockets they're supposed to be launching.
Their commercial partners – SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin – are already there.
The workforce is there.
The infrastructure is there.

Musk endorsed Donalds.
Rick Scott, Ted Cruz, Chip Roy, 75 percent of the Florida House Republican caucus – all signed on.
The Republican primary is August 18, 2026.
Every American who walked on the Moon left Earth from Florida's coast.
It's past time the people running NASA did the same.
