Democrats told you non-citizen voting was a right-wing fantasy.
A 24-year-old Mexican national in Fort Myers just admitted it happened – and she voted in the election that sent Donald Trump back to the White House.
Now Florida is coming after her with felony charges, and Democrats are scrambling to explain why they blocked the law that would have stopped this.
She Signed the Oath and Voted Anyway
Astrid Shamatu Navarrete Quintana arrived in the United States legally.
She holds a permanent resident card – a green card – which she obtained in March 2023.
Legal status in America comes with rules.
Voting isn't one of the rights it grants.
On August 19, 2024, Quintana filled out a voter registration application in Lee County.
The form asked directly: "Are you a citizen of the United States of America?"
She checked yes.

She wasn't.
The form also included a sworn oath – printed in plain language – warning that submitting false information is a third-degree felony carrying a maximum penalty of $5,000 or five years in prison.
Quintana signed it anyway.
On November 5, 2024, she walked into a polling station at 9:54 a.m. and cast a ballot in the presidential election.
Florida investigators didn't find this by accident.
The Lee County Supervisor of Elections flagged the discrepancy.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Election Crime Unit and an FBI Special Agent tracked her down, knocked on her door in July 2025, and conducted a recorded interview.
Quintana confirmed she voted.
She confirmed she knew about the elections office letter sent months earlier informing her she was ineligible.
She said she thought her green card made her eligible.
She was wrong.
She's now charged with two felonies: voting as an unqualified non-citizen elector and false swearing.
Both are third-degree felonies under Florida law, and the Office of the Attorney General is prosecuting.
The System That Let This Happen
Quintana got on the voter rolls because the system that put her there requires almost nothing to do it.
Federal law has required since 1996 that only citizens vote in federal elections.
But the National Voter Registration Act – the law governing how people actually get registered – requires nothing more than checking a box.
No passport. No birth certificate. No naturalization papers.
Just a checkbox and a signature.
That's the loophole Democrats have protected for decades.

The SAVE Act – the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act – would have closed it.
Rep. Chip Roy introduced the bill to require documentary proof of citizenship before anyone gets added to a voter roll.
The Republican-controlled House passed it in April 2025, 220 to 208 – every one of those 208 no votes cast by a Democrat.
Chuck Schumer called it "dead on arrival" in the Senate and said it "reads more like a how-to guide for voter suppression."
A woman from Mexico just voted in a presidential election by checking a box.
Schumer wants to keep that system in place.
Florida Has Been Here Before
This isn't Florida's first non-citizen voting arrest, and it won't be the last.
In January 2025, FDLE arrested James Ross Wightman, a British national who used a fake Ohio birth certificate to vote illegally six times across 2022, 2023, and 2024.
In April 2024, they arrested Lazaro Valle-Villar, a Cuban citizen who falsely claimed citizenship on two voter registration applications and voted in local elections.
Two Ukrainian women in Palm Beach were charged in federal court for voting in the 2024 presidential election while still awaiting citizenship.
That case involved coordination with DOGE.
Florida is catching these cases because DeSantis built the infrastructure to find them.
The FDLE Election Crime Unit exists specifically for this.
He stood up the Office of Election Crimes and Security years ago because the federal system had no mechanism to stop non-citizen voting on its own.
Democrats called that paranoid.
They called it voter suppression.

They sued to block it.
Astrid Navarrete Quintana is why DeSantis built it.
Every state that doesn't have Florida's enforcement infrastructure is flying blind.
Non-citizens are on the rolls in Massachusetts, Ohio, and Virginia – the Heritage Foundation documented it.
The difference is whether anyone is looking.
Democrats don't want anyone looking.
That's not a conspiracy theory.
It's a voting record.
