Donald Trump just renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America and Chuck Schumer called it "sad and pathetic."
Now a Florida politician wanted to name a brand new lake after Ron DeSantis himself.

When a social media post floated the idea of "Lake DeSantis" this week, the Florida governor had a one-line answer.
"Respectfully, that would be the easiest veto of my tenure!" he wrote.
No press release.
No committee hearing.
No lengthy statement about the honor of public service.
Just a governor who knows which team he's playing for – and it isn't his own.
The moment landed because of what's happening right now in Washington, DC.
On August 27, President Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," directing Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the federal Geographic Names Information System within 30 days.
Trump's reasoning was plain: "The United States is the greatest protector of the Great Lakes, including the body of water currently known as Lake Ontario."

Democrats lost their minds.
Chuck Schumer – the Senate minority leader from New York – called the order "sad and pathetic" and warned that voters would respond at the ballot box.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced her state would refuse to use the new name and pointed out that the standard kids' acronym for the Great Lakes – HOMES – now spells SHAME with Trump's change.
Rep. Joe Morella accused Trump of "playing games with a map" to distract from failed trade talks.
They apparently missed what was happening right underneath their feet.
Florida Already Moved On
While Democrats were busy being outraged, Florida got to work.
Florida Education Commissioner Henry Mack announced that public schools will update standards and materials to recognize "Lake America" immediately.
Rep. Jimmy Patronis introduced the "Lake America Act" – legislation to replace every reference to Lake Ontario with "Lake America" in federal laws, maps, and records.
Patronis is the same congressman who led the charge on the Gulf of America Act earlier this year after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico – legislation that passed the House and earned a personal invitation for Trump to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the newly named waters.
"President Trump put America back on the map," Patronis said. "Now we're putting America on Lake Ontario. Canada can call it whatever they want, but here in America, I say we call it Lake America."
DeSantis already signed a law last year enshrining "Gulf of America" in Florida's official lexicon – the move that sent Google Maps updating its platform within weeks of Trump's January 2025 order.
He turned down a lake named after himself.
He signed one named after America instead.
Trump Is Writing Geography and Democrats Can't Stop Him
This isn't a quirk.
It's a doctrine.
Gulf of Mexico became Gulf of America on Day One of Trump's second term.
Lake Ontario is now Lake America – and it happened because Canada walked away from trade negotiations, triggering 50% tariffs on $20 billion in Canadian goods, with Canada's retaliatory tariffs set to hit September 8.
Trump answered by putting their most famous lake on an American map.
No troops. No billion-dollar appropriation.
Just a pen and a doctrine that forces the other side to respond publicly.
Every time Schumer calls the order "sad and pathetic," he's choosing a Canadian province's naming rights over American pride – and his voters are watching.
Hochul refusing to say "Lake America" doesn't make the name go away.
It just tells you whose side she's on.
Bill Maher – not exactly a Trump ally – already spotted the trap Democrats walked into.
"The liberals are very pissed at this," Maher said on HBO's Real Time last week, before adding: "They say you can't just go around changing things to fit your political agenda. Just ask any Latinx birthing person."
Even the late-night crowd knows Democrats picked the wrong hill.
Florida kids will grow up learning that Lake America sits on the northern border – taught by a governor who cared more about the name of the lake than his own.
